The ARC Centre of Excellence for Dark Matter Particle Physics brings together experts from across Australia and internationally to unlock the secrets of dark matter and foster the science and engineering leaders of the future.

The purest sodium iodide crystals ever seen in Australia or in any current physics experiment in the world are now being grown. They will be used in the SABRE South dark matter experiment in regional Australia. See how they will work and the challenges of handling them. youtube.com/shorts/bFmOo... 🧪

The strongest yet constraints have been placed on certain rare decays of subatomic particles, narrowing the window for where new "hidden" particles could be lurking,. A data analysis from BELLE II found no evidence of new particles in channels studied-valuable information in the dark matter hunt!🧪

What is the collective noun for physicists? An impressive nucleus(?!) gathered in Stawell last week to tour the Stawell Underground Physics Lab and discuss the strategy behind our #darkmatter research. It was exciting to host scientists from around the world in this small Victorian town. 🧪

BIG SHOUTOUT to @darkmatteraus.bsky.social, @ozgrav.bsky.social and SUPL for helping make this trip really informative and awesome. I *really* do love sharing so much of the good science we are doing here in Australia, and this huge project is going to be super interesting.

The LZ collaboration has released results that extend the experiment's search for low-mass #darkmatter and set world-leading limits on WIMPs. It was the first time it has detected signals from the sun's neutrinos. Congratulations to our researchers Robert James and Theresa Fruth and all involved! 🧪

We might be unlocking one of the universe's great mysteries, but that doesn't mean we don't have to do the chores! As equipment arrives in the lab, it must be cleaned before it is installed and tested. All of this is in preparation for the arrival of the SABRE South #darkmatter experiment! 🧪

It's not very often you hear a member of the audience blowing raspberries during a presentation, but we're happy to hear gorgeous baby noises at our Annual Workshop! It has been fantastic to see the light relief our CI's little one has brought to our deep dives into #darkmatter research. 🧪

📡We are receiving transmissions from deep underground! This dashboard displays the performance of the equipment in our underground lab in Stawell. The same software reports temperature, humidity and dust levels. This ensures conditions are optimal for the arrival of our #darkmatter experiment. 🧪

The importance of basic research “no one wants to see taxpayers’ monies being misspent. But world-changing discoveries often occur unexpectedly and are built on years…decades — of fundamental research that expanded our knowledge of the world” 🧪 #Research #Scicomm www.nature.com/articles/d41...

From MRI to Ozempic: breakthroughs that show why fundamental research must be protected

In these financially straitened times, funders must recognize that great discoveries often arise from work that was looking for something completely different.
