My first encounter with Ray Bradbury was the Martian Chronicles miniseries. I loved it , and to this day I'm miffed there are no canals on Mars nor martians racing their land yachts.
Back in 1979 or so (fourth grade) I remember our teacher Mrs. Wentz read all of _The Martian Chronicles_ to us over the course of some weeks. (This was before the Rock Hudson miniseries I'll add.) Heady stuff, but I'm glad of it. Of course, this story always sits with me. Today is August 4, 2026.
Plus ça change. When the Establishment continues to eulogise utter shits, what hope for our society? youtu.be/8vrQS10cb0A?...

I am saddened by the tone of commentary in this place about my former BBC colleague. The level of vitriol seems more suited to the other place. I worked with Rod at the Today programme. He took no prisoners, but he was witty and personally capable of genuine warmth. My sympathy to his family.
Hear me out, but I really don't think we should be giving the Home Office access to nuclear weapons.
"a Reform government will put an end to the split between the Royal Navy, Border Force, the Coastguard, and the Home Office by establishing one joint command under one commander" Including aircraft carriers and Trident submarines? See page 8 and ask questions from there. #WATO
Would I Lie to You? (16th September 2011). Did Terry Wogan deliberately set fire to his colleague's scripts when they were live on air?
Sigh, 6Music news providing free publicity for Reform and Farage again. Stupid fuckers.

Fun fact: the scientist who discovered the automotive uses of tetraethyl lead was also the guy who invented CFCs.
In 1965 a guy called Clair Patterson who had successfully worked out the age of the Earth... revealed that in the process he'd found out that a thin layer of lead covered the planet and it was there in everything from dandruff to water to plants and people's skin... guess what...2/3
Just back from picking my wife up from Reading town centre. In the centre of Reading, lashing with rain , streets awash as the drains are temporarily overwhelmed. Then, get to Junction 11 of the M4 and nothing, dry as a bone. The showers are heavy and very isolated!

Kemi Badenoch tells PM not to raise taxes to fund social care
In a letter to the PM, the Conservative leader offers to work with him on adult social care reform.

Kemi is not a serious politician if she thinks any kind of solution can be done with no extra money. My late parents both needed extra care. It was largely self funded and it was f*cking expensive. It's not going to be fixed with the pocket change down the back of the sofa.
www.bbc.co.uk/news/article... How decent of her, she'll work with him to find a solution, while explicitly ruling out the only possible solutions.
In Asimov's Foundation, it was knives nit cutting and the air con breaking down. I bet the idea of the dildos being toasted never occurred to him 😂
There was a lot of talk about future drone warfare when I was a RAND fellow 30 years ago, but degrading civilian morale by singeing an adversary's mail order dildo supply was not something that came up

Repost @mickydolenz: This month in 1967, @themonkees released “Pleasant Valley Sunday.” Written by the extraordinary Gerry Goffin and Carole King, the song reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 11 in the U.K. And somehow, it still feels just as much fun to sing all these years later.
