A story of cause and effect: Last November, Ontario banned cities from using speed safety cameras to issue tickets. Reckless speeding immediately surged in Toronto, Ottawa, Guelph, and cities throughout the province. A 🧵 about my latest in Bloomberg (gift link)

What Happens When Speed Cameras Get Shut Off

In 2025, Ontario banned automated traffic enforcement. Now the number of drivers exceeding the speed limit has surged, according to traffic data.

Today, August 4, 2026, is the setting of Ray Bradbury’s short story “There Will Come Soft Rains” about a fully automated house continuing on after the family who lived there and the world around it died in a nuclear blast.

When we booked our Algonquin backcountry trip I was disappointed because a full moon would make for poor stargazing. Had NO idea the full moon would rise in the east opposite in the sky from the sunset an hour earlier. Absolutely stunning. Photos can't really capture it.

Don't forget your respirator if you're going outside — Toronto currently has the second-worst air quality on the planet. Temperatures are also expected to reach a high of 29 and the UV index will be at nine, which is very high, according to Environment Canada. Follow here for live updates:

Toronto air quality live: Ontario wildfire smoke continues to smother the city; orange-level warning persists

Toronto is currently ranked third for most polluted air in the world on IQAir.

Forest fire smoke in Ontario has cut air temperature 4-5°C than forecast, greatly reducing electricity demand today. You can see the areas with clear sky in Norfolk County near Lake Erie are around 32°C while Toronto is 28°C. Normally Toronto is one or two degrees warmer.

This is reverse from typical - or at least Cambridge and Toronto would be the same temperature if it wasn't for the forest fire smoke.Ontario Demand from IESO showing at least 2000 MW lower than forecast at 11 AM EST on July 15 2026

Despite most of solar power generation in Ontario being hidden to IESO, the control room can still see the impact of weather (such as clouds) moving over populated areas with distributed solar PV generation. If you get an opportunity to tour the control room, do so! Very impressive.

A reminder to all following along: IESO has no visibility on the majority of installed solar #PV in Ontario, as it's mostly on the distribution grid (and IESO only tracks transmission generation) There is roughly 2500MW of installed PV capacity which is invisible and appears only as lower demand
