Deus ex Machina Or Univac and Epicac Great advances are promised by the machine gods: miraculous increase in production of CO2 and nightmares worthy of digital art Intelligence has always been an art but rarely so artificial and so toxic+

BRANCUSI'S GOLDEN BIRDS David Rogers Remember the present Live in the future Forget the past Hear birdsong and cat purr Hold everything you want in one hand Let the rest go The present is an egg left by the phoenix Do you really think you know what's inside

This AI stuff is crazy. I ran a review someone gave one of my books through an AI detector--or so it claims to be. But it flagged one sentence as AI-generated because it used the word "because." The "detectors" are useless, I think. You know a human wrote it if you saw it being written. That's it.

Anyone else nostalgic for the days when electric typewriters with correction ribbons were considered high-tech?

INQUIRY David Rogers Why do we make so many STOP signs and so few GO signs What do they hope to keep us from finding STOP signs pretend they are all alike but if they succeeded we would need only one The rest distract us from the final stop As if any word could mean the same thing twice

Flies in the News by David Rogers Today I think of King Lear the mad monarch who had yet wisdom enough to resign and Gloucester who said gods kill us like flies for sport I see no gods but certain human ideas of sport are hideous enough I envy small animals who have wings to fly away
