Over the last few weeks we've been hearing a Green Woodpecker from our house but never been able to see it. Today the noises seemed unusual and in different places. After a fleeting glimpse of flight towards a tree, finally spotted a pair. Think one on left is a little youngster.
Some Oystercatchers, Black-Headed Gulls and big ships. #AvonBirds - Portishead Fishermans Steps, 21 July 2026.
Well this was a nice treat this morning - a little Weasel running around on Portishead pier... #AvonWeasels - Portishead, 15 July 2026.
Popped down to the sea (locally known as The Hole) to see if there were any shore birds. There weren't but we did see juvenile wagtails, lots of sparrows, a rock pipit, collard doves and a *weasel*!!! #AvonBirds
Lovely couple of hours at Portbury Wharf this morning, in the breeze before it got too hot. Little grebes and a lot of goldfinches at south pools. An avocet, 3 little egrets and a redshank at north pools #AvonBirds #PWNR
Saw my first ever cinnabar moth caterpillars. We’ve been checking the ragwort religiously and were finally rewarded this week #PWNR
Didn't expect to see an Avocet bimbling about at Portbury Wharf this morning. #AvonBirds - Portishead, 12 July 2026.
Over the past few years I've been on a mission to see a Cinnabar Moth caterpillar. Today I finally found *one*!
Always nice to see a Kingfisher. This was one of a pair down at a rather blue Portishead Hole today. #AvonBirds - Portishead, 3 July 2026.

Nice trip to Slimbridge today. Here are some sights from the Rushy Hide including a Lapwing, Avocet, young gulls and a Goldfinch. #WWTSlimbridgeSightings - Slimbridge, 2 July 2026.
Local cherry thief caught in the act. Our tree is pretty much empty now but it still managed to find one. #AvonBirds - Portishead, 28 June 2026.
Lots to see at Portbury Wharf this morning including Sand Martins, GS Woodpecker, family of five noisy Kestrels learning to hover, and a bunch of Wrens. #AvonBirds - Portishead, 28 June 2026.
Had a quick dip in our pond today and found a newt and several little larvae. Lovely to see!
We’ve seen less finches since stopping feeding seeds in May. The good thing is you can garden for birds. Today this young goldfinch spent a while enjoying these sorrel seeds. We’ve also go teasels that aren’t quite ready for them yet. Plants are a great way to feed finches safely. @rspb.bsky.social
So excited to discover that the little grebes have had little little grebes (humbugs) We thought there were four but there must have been an extra one hiding on their parent because later there were five! Not great pics as they were far and away. #PWNR #AvonBirds
Continuing my occasional series of Oystercatchers on electrical substations... #AvonBirds #PWNR - Portishead, 19 June 2026.
Another Oystercatcher, this one in the classic electricity substation habitat. #AvonBirds #PWNR - Portishead, 1 June 2025.
can't quite work out what this scraggly little fledgling is, has very orange legs. Any thoughts would be appreciated! #AvonBirds - Portishead, 13 June 2026.
A formation of Oystercatchers. Three of six flying over Portbury Wharf today. #AvonBirds - Portishead, 9 June 2026.
Spied a Reed Warbler and two recently fledged young in a tree this morning - nice to see instead of just hearing them. #AvonBirds - Portbury Wharf, 9 June 2026.
Some little birds, dragonflies and caterpillars at Portbury Wharf this afternoon. #AvonBirds - Portishead, 8 June 2026.
Bonus tit party. A mixed gang of about 15+ tits just bombarded the garden, including about 10++ blues, 3 longs, 1 great. #AvonBirds - Portishead, 5 June 2026.
Over at Backwell Lake there was a gang of at least four Jays noising about in some trees. (There were at least four birds but couldn't quite work out the adult/young ratio) #AvonBirds - Nailsea, 5 June 2026.
