Clingy

Months gone by,
learning how to simply say less—
waiting,
for you to ask.

You were my friend, a lover,
warmth on many dark days.

While I was becoming someone new,
you let yourself fade.

Not a single question for me.
Not a “how are you?” No “how was school?”
Not even a phone call on the Sunday evenings I left open for you.

So in October, I broke; my heart gave way.
With it, the lighthouse I’d followed, gone dark—
Our shore, lost in fog.

Lost at sea,
the bath became my ocean.

Water’s warmth crept over me,
soothing in the absence of your love.
It was there I let my eyes close, waiting,
hoping that one day things might change.

For someone who said they loved me,
your absence left me hollow.

Clingy,
I overheard you say.

But behind that word—
a friend.

Someone who loved you.
Someone who needed to be seen.
Someone who did all they could with the little they had.

A friend who misses you, but could no longer abandon themselves—

now you’re a stranger.

The rest of me lost somewhere in between.

To you—
Clingy is all they will remain.
