Director of the New Netherland Institute, Albany, New York, archives rat, #VastNewNetherland

As is my annual tradition in August, I am emailing Dutch people to ask them things and finding out that they are all on vacation and cursing American work culture.

I have one last slot for the 2026-2027 NNI Scholars Seminar - it's in October. Any historians, art historians, literature folks, etc., have anything Dutch Atlantic that they want feedback on?

I had a delightful time reading the Duyckinck papers under the watchful eyes of the Half Moon Window at New York Historical. And a very summer letter from Johanna Duyckinck to her sister begging her to get to New York faster for a visit!

From Alice Kenney's “Neglected Heritage: Hudson River Valley Dutch Material Culture,” in the Winterthur Portfolio (1985). She died the same year the article came out, but I feel that I can almost hear her sighing or maybe screaming into the void.

Archivists, how do you store your papers at home? I'm looking for some of archives box or folder that I could use to store my kids artwork, etc.

NNI got a big used book donation (New Netherland, Revolutionary War). If you're in the United States, and want any (used so may have underlining/highlighting), message me; we'll mail it to you. Asking for a $5 donation to NNI to cover shipping. (Sorry non-US folks, can't afford shipping to you.)

If only I had realized you could ask your parents for a peacock...(and her father was a minster in the Dutch Reformed Church, too!) Gerardus Duyckinck I, Wilhelmina Ritzema (ca. 1743–1813), From the Collection of the New York Historical.

I'm looking for an expert in 17th century *Swedish* to read a document (only a half page) and confirm that it is, in fact, Swedish. Are any of you that person?
