She felt like there had been a test, and she hadn’t passed. Alice began running through the interaction from the beginning. Everything had seemed fine until she’d made that stupid comment about Owen living as his authentic self. That was probably too much. Fuck, she’d messed it up!

“So,” she pressed her lips together in a tight smile, hunching her shoulders as she glanced around. “Why don’t you tell us how you’ve been surviving out here by yourself?”

“Honestly?” Owen chuckled. “I just keep my windows and doors locked all night. I’ve been trying to get the dog nosing around here to come inside, but she’s skittish. I figure she’d be a good guard dog. How long have you two been together?”

“Oh, we’re not together,” Noah said with an abruptness that offended Alice. He looked sheepish, then shrugged lightly. “We’ve only just found each other. I think a week?” He looked at Alice, who nodded.

“Maybe a little less, yeah. I’ve been trying to get a garden started in his huge back yard, but there’s not really any shade.”

I have 'watched!' #WipSnips #writing

A soft, wheezing breath, quiet enough that she would have missed it, came from behind one of the tall aisles. Alice’s heart thudded in her chest, and she could hear the blood pumping through her ears. She slowly reached for her gun, trying to carefully spot the culprit. Her headlamp found it; ashen fingers curled between the metal slats of the aisle. Large, sunken black eyes, a little girl, face framed with once blonde curls. The wheezing breath came from a mouth that hung slightly open, rows of sharp teeth protruding from behind the lips, hissing softly.

Alice’s hand gripped the gun. She kept her eyes on the munchkin, watching it track her movements with its bulbous, nearly insect-like eyes. She pressed her lips into a thin line as her hand shook, holding her breath as she slowly began to pull the gun from its holster.

The munchkin’s face changed from neutral curiosity to rage as Alice stepped on the bony hand of a corpse. It scaled the aisle, reaching the top faster than Alice could turn and run. It landed hard on her, knocking her to the ground and her gun from her hand. Pain erupted in her nose, and her eyes watered as she felt her braid being pulled upwards, angling her neck backwards unnaturally.

She screamed.

“Trans” Alice asked. Had she heard that right? The look on both Owen and Noah’s face told her she had. “What do you mean?” She asked. “Are you a woman?”

“No,” Owen said carefully. “Wrong way.”

“‘Wrong way’ what?”

“Not a trans woman, a trans man.”

“Oh.” Alice had never thought about it going the other way. Most of the trans people she’d seen were women. “So, did you get a dick?”

“And, that’s a nosy question,” Owen chuckled. Alice giggled drunkenly.

“Sorry. I didn’t know that was a thing. Oh, fuck!” She slapped her forehead. “That’s why you looked at me weird when I made the ‘authentic self’ comment!”

“Yeah, I thought you’d figured it out somehow.” he shrugged.

I have fell! A munchkin attacks. #WipSnips #writing

“I’ve got y-”

The weight was suddenly lifted off of him. The munchkin flailed as Owen gripped it around its waist and yanked it back. It twisted in his arms, and Owen fell back onto the bed. Noah rolled off of Alice, who broke free right then.

“Fuck!” Owen kicked and flailed as Noah tried to pull the munchkin off by its hair. It screamed with a primal, guttural sound that chilled Noah.

“Alice!” He shouted. “Knife!”

The munchkin switched tactics, releasing Owen. It leveraged with its leg, rolling to the side, taking Noah with it. Frenzied, raspy screams pierced the air as the munchkin once again twisted and pinned Noah. His eyes widened as he felt a sharp pain in his ear.

Alice slammed her knife into it lower back. It let out a whine of pain, its grip loosening on Noah’s hair. He grabbed it by the tongue, yanking it out of his ear.

Got stream!! Noah reflects on his time as an A list celebrity in the middle of a very crucial moment in time. #Writing #wipsnips

“I think the real turning point was when you started live streaming. I was competing against thousands of others confessing their love, but you once read mine out, and said thank you.” She hunched her shoulders, an embarrassed smile on her face. “So, I went on every one you had, no matter when it was. You remembered my username. I knew we had a connection then.”

Noah couldn’t remember this particular part of his career. He’d been pushed to live stream nearly every moment he wasn’t actively working. He didn’t have a choice in this. He’d been made to connect with fans in his own home. He’d been forced to sing, do dances, do thirst traps… if he didn’t have a contract, or wasn’t afraid of his mother, he would have quit. It was the most exhausting part of his life.

It wasn’t as if he didn’t enjoy some of it, but it took a lot out of him. He liked seeing people react to his jokes, even though they felt forced to him. He did like that adoration. Everyone wanted to be loved, and he was no exception. He knew it was hollow, though. None of them knew what he was really like, none of them knew him on a deeper level. It was all shallow, even the ‘secret’ confessions. He’d never liked parasocial relationships, but his mom made him do it. If it were up to him, he’d act, and that was it.

“I know you like no one else does,” Alice sighed. She looked at Owen as the munchkin knocked on the door.

“Yeah,” Alice sighed. She chewed on her bottom lip, peeling a little skin with her teeth. “I don’t think it would hurt so much if I didn’t have a huge crush on him.”

“What?” Owen turned, his eyes wide. He put his left hand on his heart. “You? Have a crush on him? No way.”

“Okay, okay,” she laughed. “Is it really that obvious?”

“Yes. I called it right away.”

“Oh, wow,” Alice sighed. “I’m guessing he’s figured it out.”

“Meh,” Owen waved his hand in a ‘so-so’ gesture. “I’m not really one to gossip, so I’ve never mentioned it. I think he’s caught on to some of your comments.”
