Hello! 👋 We’re the Geomagnetism Team from the British Geological Survey. We’ll be posting a daily geomagnetic forecast here, along with occasional aurora alerts when we’re expecting a geomagnetic storm. We’ll also keep you updated on the team’s research and new developments.

The end of an era! The last broadcast of BBC Radio 4 on Longwave (198kHz). The transmitter will be switched off at the end of June after nearly a century of transmission from Droitwich.

Do you like fieldwork and understanding the Earth's magnetic field? Have electronics and/or programming skills? We have the job for you! We are looking for a Geomagnetic instrumentation and field engineer to based in Edinburgh, but with travel across the UK and potentially overseas. 🧲🧭🌍⛏️

The fast (~1400 km/s) CME that launched yesterday is forecast to arrive sometime Tues. Probably during the day in the UK, so not great for aurora. But there's a fast solar wind stream near Earth, and the precise location/timing of that could really change the CME propagation.

We have upgraded our geomagnetic forecast today (12 November 2025) to the highest intensity level amid an ongoing solar storm. Current predictions suggest that the activity will result in potentially the largest solar storm to hit our planet in over two decades.
