One of Ireland's less common butterflies, the green hairstreak, in a rewilding part of the farm yesterday. Rewilding isn't just about getting more trees and forests back, but increasing diversity and abundance of *all* our natural species and ecosystems.

Last week, I met the Grandmother Oak of Cahermurphy Woods in co Clare, one of the largest, most charismatic wild trees I've ever seen in Ireland. Once commonplace, such wondrous beings are now vanishingly rare. So much lost, so little left. Time to start bringing some back, through *rewilding*.

At first glance, these two winter scenes may look similar. But the native rainforest on the left is being killed by overgrazing, while the other is in a healthy, regenerating, state. We owe it to nature – to ourselves – to learn the difference, and to act on it.

I can't wait to celebrate World Rewilding Day 2026 with the wonderful Kerri ní Dochartaigh at the Slieve Aughty Centre, Co. Galway, on Friday the 20th. We'll be talking the Great Forest of Aughty, and rewilding's potential to return some of the nature we've lost. www.celtnet.org/events/world...

*SO* thrilled yesterday to see the first screening of An Irish Atlantic Rainforest, the film about my 17-year journey rewilding a West Cork farm. It went far and away beyond my hopes: a mesmerisingly lovely, immersive piece of work, almost dreamlike in parts, but grounded in ecology and daily life.

Eyeries Cascades, nearby on the Kealincha River. There's still some residual oak, rowan, willow, and other native tree species around, but I can't help imagining how magical this must have been when it was enclosed in thick, wild Atlantic rainforest. Without sheep, it could be again. #Rewilding 🌎

A very old oak in Dereen Garden, Kerry. When it started life, the area likely still belonged to the O'Sullivan Beares, before English colonialists took it by force in the mid-17th century and cleared the rainforest. Just like Palestine now, land theft, racist genocide, & ecocide went hand in hand.
