YYJ Dog, Canadian by choice, embarrassing dad and partner. I know bikes are better than cars, but still have a car. Committed to reconciliation, freedom and peace for Palestine, and anti-racism (a work in progress).
We love our AirBNBs… except for the total lack of accountability and the poor treatment of employees... The story here outlines just one nightmare experience. Interested to hear others, and why we might want to curtail or regulate this “business” in #yyj. open.substack.com/pub/thewalru...

Has the City of Victoria ever had a better Council?
I have been paying very close attention to municipal politics in the CRD, and especially in the City of Victoria, for the last 22 years.

Remember this picture, & others like it, every time you hear someone in your city say "we're not Amsterdam." This was #Amsterdam in the 1970s. Many of the cities we admire made tough choices regarding cars in the past, and are still making better choices today. Better choices instead of excuses.

And can we point out that building density in cities protects existing INTACT forest ecosystems by delaying or preventing further suburban sprawl?
Enough with the FALSE CHOICE between increasing infill density or increasing the urban tree canopy. BOTH are not only possible, but absolutely necessary. Good design is the key. The real design challenge isn’t building density or the space needed for trees… it’s the space we still surrender to cars.
Elon Musk took over Twitter and turned it into the anti-woke, fascist-amplifying X. There’s been debate about whether to stay since he bought it. But seeing how it’s evolved and the recent Grok deepfake scandal, there’s no good argument to stay. I stopped posting there. You should too.

This is a lie. It's a right-wing talking point to say rents are falling "because of immigration changes." Immigrants aren't why the market is suddenly flooded with unsold 1-bedroom apartments that were CLEARLY designed for speculators and short-term stays. The AirBNB law changed things a LOT.
Reality check: B.C. government takes credit for falling rents. Experts say federal immigration cuts a big reason
According to rentals.ca, B.C. apartment rental prices are down 12.1 per cent in the past three years.
