my thing about the odyssey film criticism thing is how a bunch of smart critics i respect came out to write op eds that can be briefly summarized as "i love watching brainless stupid shit and what i crave most is being celebrated for it"

tom of holland does a great job of nailing peter parker's essential mopeyness without landing in the realm of doe eyed dope that tobey maguire played. it's mind of marvelous how well the charm lands. wish zendaya got more to chew on in the script

Every decade is partially the worst parts of the preceding one, bioaccumulating in the body politic, and I don't know what we're supposed to do about that but total social and economic reordering of society. The '90s, the 2000s, the 2010s keep becoming cool again in my lifetime and it's killing us.

the problem with cyberpunk as a vision of the future has less to do with technology and more to do with cyberpunk has always been a genre about folk religion and spirituality. it can't embrace a future where much of real technology seeks to eliminate it
