A little GIS to start the morning. For a few months now, I've been puzzling over just how close the world's first deep-sea mining test came to ploughing through the world's largest cold water coral reef. I finally have an answer, and it's: Less than 2 kilometers.

I don't think even the wonkiest high seas policy wonks I work with are ready to grasp the absolute global chaos that will be unleashed if major powers start deciding that they no longer need to defer to the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.
