🗃️OK, #medievalists, help a fallen comrade out. Is there a general guide to the ways Hebrew words were transliterated into Latin? I'm interested in the eleventh century, but anything will do for my purpose.? More to the point, how would ש (shin) be transliterated when pronounced as "sh?"
This is a fucking GREAT book. And at THAT price...

We need to either charge them or the companies they used to "plan" for the cost of the rescue. Maybe both.
"The USFS said the climbers told them they had used an artificial intelligence platform, YouTube videos and AllTrails to plan the trip. They said they relied on AI to decide what food to bring and how much food and water they would need." 🙃

Without saying your age, what's your favorite movie that came out when you were 20 years old?
I'm holding on to Pluto as a planet and expect to be vindicated, just like supporters of Brontosaurus. I'll just wait right here *starts whistling*
um, no? calling it a planet in 1930 was the actual mistake. but we fixed it and are all good now thanks.
Of course Whiskey Pete is Gen-X. We like to complain about our generation being passed over, but when I see who our most prominent politicos are, I start to think it's not a bad thing. Us and Generation Jones.
This is an absolutely catastrophic data breach of an identity verification vendor 150+ million drivers license scans that includes photos, address, license numbers etc. It includes Pete Hegseth, security researchers, and even the deputy director of the FBI. krebsonsecurity.com/2026/09/fbi-...
“Simply put, the very act of filming somebody without their permission – for whatever purpose – is in itself a form of violation, perhaps even of theft. On a philosophical level, it is the blithe assertion of one person’s liberty and rights over those of another.”
The law won't save us from Meta's 'pervert glasses'. The only solution is mockery | Jonathan Liew
These things are undermining not just our public spaces but the very nature of being human. Let’s shame them off the streets, says Guardian columnist Jonathan Liew

Transcribing a 1660 treaty that, amongst other things, forced the English and French into agreeing to abolish the slave trade in Indigenous Caribbeans in exchange for peace. Quite remarkable, and I'm happy to stand corrected if anyone has ever come across a treaty like this.
I'm starting to wish the rest of the world would just embargo us. That'd sort things out fairly quickly.

Clearly an alternate reality is extruding into our own. I want to go to there.
An island mysteriously appeared — then disappeared — on British Columbia’s largest reservoir By Aug. 5, the island was no longer showing up in satellite data
Anybody out there to stuff the hunter so the buffalo can have a trophy?
I love that for him! 😍
*Homer Simpson voice* The hottest month ever recorded SO FAR.
🔥🔥🔥“July was the hottest month ever recorded in the US, with repeated, scorching heatwaves across much of the country helping shatter all previous monthly temperature records stretching back over the full 132 years of reliable measurements.”🔥🔥🔥
Could be worse. She got written out of LA Law by being dropped down an elevator shaft. It was (unintentionally?) hilarious.
The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, his brother Daryl and his other brother Daryl.
new joke format just dropped: you say the father the son and the holy spirit, then add two extra things.
This was an amazing moment and got me a bit in my feels, too.
“are you coming back?” got me tearing up (and kinda preparing myself for a bunch of ✨creative pursuits✨ i’m likely gonna see on my timeline) 😌
Go see "Coyote vs. Acme," y'all. Solid script, good performances and the cartoon beats are spot-on. It's been a hot minute since Looney Tunes characters were done so well. IMO, the best cartoon/live-action hybrid since "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?"
Prediction: Donald Trump will issu an executive order renaming Ontario, California to America.
They blame Obama for Hurricane Katrina response. This is a slam dunk.
I think it would be hard for them to blame this one on Biden.
Who says the younger generation doesn't know what's what?
Same, son
💯 When I was doing my MAT program, there was constant emphasis that teaching is a PROFESSION, not a calling. As Marty notes, if it's a calling, they can treat you like shit. This is also why even in "professions," the bosses like talk about "family." You'll take negative reciprocity from family.
When the bosses (or the public) can convince you that your occupation is a calling, they can treat you like shit. All callings are jobs first. Remember, both jobs and work are four-letter words (😉).
Not that etymology is destiny, but it's worth repeating that a "universitas" is, among other things, a guild. Medieval universities were guilds of students and professors. Guilds existed to ensure training standards and fair treatment for their members. Sounds like, I dunno, a union.

How long before Trump rescinds his renamings and we get Mount Trump, the Gulf of Trump, and Lake Trump?
Fuck Spencer Cox and fuck anyone who thinks this was even a remotely good idea. We would have gained nothing from this except, I suspect, Trump leaning into his own bullshit even further.
In his new book, Spencer Cox says he tried to persuade Biden to pardon Trump and to persuade Trump to become a more unifying figure—all part of what Cox frames as thwarted but worthwhile attempts at depolarization, @mckaycoppins.bsky.social reports.
