This is for Alan's bird of the day. A mother mute swan and six cygnets following her.

Looks like midnight with a spotlight but it was taken in the middle of the day in bright sunlight. It's underexposed with spot metering so only the mother's body has "correct" lighting.

A weathered fence runs the length of this field and up the hill in the distance. Hiking trails both sides so I think this fence is here purely to keep the sheep to one side and out of Glendalough.

This one stared at me the whole way past. There's little to see out here I suppose.

A sheep stares me down ascending the trail up the other side of the upper lake at Glendalough. The trail is mostly stone steps here leading up and across the ridge. The path gives way to boardwalks, gravel paths and eventually out onto the fields of the surrounding hills. I can post some of those later today.

Power lines running up the side of a hill, covered in a thick sea of ferns, on a beautiful warm summer's day in the Wicklow mountains. It doesn't look like it but this was quite a precarious photo to take. I was standing in the middle of a stream, on a wet rock, straining to raise the camera above my head. It wasn't a smart move but I got away with it.

I like this one mostly for the minimalist green and blue with the power infrastructure jarring slightly against the simplicity of the nature that surrounds it.

At the start of a hike on Thursday morning I spotted this beautiful little chaffinch milling around by the upper lake in Glendalough. It was happily chomping away on the morsel by its feet there. I think it was used to being around people as it stayed quite close by, nonchalant almost.

I took a shortcut through the forest at the end of a hike. While looking around for where the path went I looked over and this fawn was standing a few metres away looking at me. They wandered around eating grass while I looked on. A marvellous end to a great day out in the sun.

Early start for a hike around Glendalough, Lugduff, Mullacor, Cullentragh and Derrybawn mountains.

This hike takes you up to those hills, around the lake and into the surrounding countryside. A perfect day out: beautiful blue skies, warm but not too warm, a cooling breeze, plenty of wildlife, surprisingly few flies and hours and hours of empty landscape to walk alone.

It been so hot this week I've gone out early in the morning. This was about 6am but even then the sun had been up for at least an hour. Thankfully still cool (and quiet) in the forest.
