Derin Halil got into games with a physics degree, a games course he finished after he'd already been hired, and a few months gamifying experimental muscle-sensing hardware. On paper it was an odd fit. In practice, that odd fit is exactly why Frontier called. Derin talks about growing up in a big North London gaming household, why physics shapes his systems design more than any games course, seven and a half years on Elite Dangerous, and the question that pushed him to move on: am I a good designer, or just a designer for Frontier?

The response to the mew God of War from an overly-voiced proportion of players is exactly what I hate about the current state of this industry. And what makes it sad is that it's not really a fault with the industry itself, it's a symptom of a sociopolitical sickness. It's exhausting.

A letter warns Shabana Mahmood that ‘targeting refugees will do nothing to tackle’ problems with housing and the NHS More than 100 charities have sent a letter to the home secretary, Shabana Mahmood, calling for an end to the “scapegoating of migrants”. The letter, sent before her speech at the Labour party conference in Liverpool on Monday afternoon, was coordinated by Refugee Action and signed by 105 organisations from a wide range of sectors – including Save the Children, Mind, Oxfam, Shelter, Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth, as well as dozens of migrant and anti-racism charities.
