In case you were wondering WHY someone would mail their scabs, the earliest inoculation available for smallpox involved grinding up the scabs and inoculating someone with a scratch on the skin. This method reduced the fatality rate from 30% to about 1%. 🧪 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variola...

Historian friend was reading a civil war era letter in an archive, the letter said “In this envelope I include my smallpox scabs” and sure enough there they were. Had to call CDC for a hazmat team.

My clever internet friends, teaching this outside of unis is _vitally_ important. That includes all these helpful posts! We have much more data than sense now, but people in the wild do want to get this right. It's a diplomatic process, with many small opportunities. We have to be relentless.

My kumbaya take on the matter is that we should teach causal inference really well — this should in principle prepare people to do better observational causal inference, to do better RCTs, to understand what is suitable in which scenario, & to appreciate the (limited) magic of randomization.
