An #IceAge masterpiece: This small carving (4.7cm) of a water #bird was made from mammoth ivory some 40,000 years ago. It's thought to be a #diver, #cormorant, or #duck. Found in the Hohle Fels cave on the Swabian Jura. It's the oldest known representation of a bird. 🧵1/2

I’ve had the best time visiting Hook Lighthouse in Co. Wexford. Dating from the early 13th century, it is believed to be the oldest purpose-built operational lighthouse in the world. The medieval tower is 36m tall with 4 levels and walls 4m thick. Originally it supported a fire beacon. #MedievalSky
