Page 12. I had a few hours before I'd be allowed to check into my hotel, so I decided to go to the Museum of Australia. But I was stopped by a security guard at the entrance who informed me that I wouldn't be allowed in with my small suitcase. They didn't have a bag/coat check, so unfortunately I had no other option than to leave.

In the Sydney Airport, I wondered what the best way to get to where I needed to go was, since my hotel was at least a half hour away. Then I noticed that there was a train station underneath the airport on a line that would take me to where I needed to be. As I waited for my train, I saw other double decker trains on the opposite line. I didn't realise double decker trains existed, so I was pretty shocked.

Page 9. My dumb ass wore pants with metal decorations on them, so I set off the airport metal detectors. I was brought aside and asked to rub the front of my pants with one hand so the agent could swab my hand for explosive materials. Very awkward to do in public. The agent scraped my hand with a test strip, which tested negative for explosives, obviously, so I was free to go.

Page 8. The 31st of January. Since I live a good hour and a bit away from my nearest airport, and my flight was at 9am, I stayed at Bianca's house the night before. She was kind enough to drop me to the airport as well, because I don't have a car. Unfortunately, I barely got any sleep because it was super hot the night before. But the show must go on!

Page 7. Headed into Big W to buy some slacks for the ceremony when mom ran into a friend of hers. She asked what we were up to, to which mom bragged that we were buying some clothes for my award ceremony. The friend asked what the ceremony was for, and I explained the Comic Arts Awards of Australia. She asked if I draw, and mom replied that I draw all the time. Drawing is probably the most well known thing about me, so I was surprised she didn't know that.

Page 6. I was watching the livestream for the previous CAAA ceremony on YouTube to try and get a feel for the event beforehand, and came to a chilling discovery. The fact that I would have to give a speech if I won an award. A lot of people don't know this about me (I don't really talk about it), but I have stage fright. BAD stage fright. I thought "I guess I'm gonna have to write a speech in advance for once in my life..."

Page 5. Trying to figure out what to wear to the ceremony, I started an internal monologue. "Ugh... I have no idea what to wear. I don't want to go too formal and look like a jackass... But I also don't want to look too casual and make it look like I don't appreciate being there... But I'll be around a bunch of Australians so they might not dress up at all!"

Page 4. The full short-list was published to the CAAA website as they were still announcing them online. Up until now, their social media had been showcasing one comic per day, and I really wanted to see if there were any other Adelaide based artists. And there was! Alice Lam, who'd submitted the first 2 chapters if her welcoming Adelaide and the Shooting Star. Go read it it's so good! My hopes for maybe winning an award diminished with every new name I read, even though I was convinced I'd only be fit for a bronze. As I read, I realised one artist had two comics in the short-list, which made me wonder again why TSD wasn't good enough while FCF was.

Page 3. On Thursday the 8th, my birthday, CAAA announced which of my comics were shortlisted. To my surprise, it was First Comic Fair! I was pretty shocked, as previously mentioned, I thought it would be Top Surgery Diary since I consider it to be the better of the pair. I also quickly realised they spelt Bianca's name wrong in the announcement graphic, so I had to suck up the courage to ask them to correct it. I also got some really nice messages from other artists, even a few I had only met once from other states.

Page 2. When I got home, I realised something about my nomination. I didn't actually know which comic they were referring to. I had submitted both the autobio comics I printed in 2024. Finn and Bianca's First Comic Fair (FCF for short), and Finn's Top Surgery Diary (TSD for short). I didn't even know if it would be one or both comics, the email didn't say. I came to the independent conclusion that it would be TSD and called it a day. Beside, the CAAA committee were starting to announce the shortlisters, so I figured I'd find out soon.

A introduction page to the comic, which when finished will be called Finn's First Solo Trip. The text reads "In early 2026, I was shortlisted for the 2025 Comic Arts Awards of Australia. The 2025 awards were for any projects published in 2024. I decided to fly to Sydney from Adelaide and spend the weekend there for the ceremony. The following comics are a collection of anything important or funny that happened. Hope you enjoy!" Underneath that paragraph is a short message crediting the Indigenous peoples Finn makes his comics on. "This comic was made on the lands of the Ramindjeri people of the Ngarrindjeri nation. This always was and always will be Aboriginal land." There is also a Ngarrindjeri flag.

Page 1. On January 6th, 2026, I finished work a little early and decided to check my email before clocking out. I opened my email to find an email from Daniel Rathborn, informing me I was shortlisted for the Comic Arts Awards of Australia. I immediately screenshotted the email and sent it to everyone I knew. Even though I submitted to the awards, I truly believed I wouldn't be nominated.
