On the latest Off The Charts Football Podcast, @vigmanoncampus.bsky.social and his colleagues tried to explain analytics in a way that anyone could understand. This is the 1-minute explanation of what our stat Total Points is and what we're trying to do in tracking it. tinyurl.com/analyticsall
This episode is sort of three parts: 1. State of football analytics: how it's used, are the nerds ruining the game, etc. 2. What's Expected Points Added (EPA), and why is it good/bad 3. How do we evaluate players statistically using EPA If any of those are interesting, check the episode out!
This week on Off The Charts, our crew tried to provide explanations of football analytics that would serve as a good introduction to advanced stats. That includes both the pluses and minuses of Expected Points Added (via @vigmanoncampus.bsky.social) podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/f...

We spent a couple recent Off the Charts podcasts digging into this stuff as well! Some tidbits: - Less predictable is better for edge rushers - Bull rush is the most common and least effective move - Blocking help from TE/slot is more effective than from the backfield

The evidence isn't definitive, but public defensive metrics (in this case DRS and FRV) having more similar and detailed components does seem to be improving alignment on the value of players. That's happening even without strong alignment on the different component calculations themselves.
We get a lot of people who look at different numbers for Defensive Runs Saved and MLB's Fielding Run Value and then ask us "What's going on?" @vigmanoncampus.bsky.social studied this and found those instances still exist but have become fewer over time www.sportsinfosolutions.com/2026/06/04/s...
You’d normally expect the stats-based list to be measured and reasonable. But fear not, the nerds have TAEKZ!

One of our goals for this year is to get more research out there, specifically with our injury data. In this case: Pitchers don't really show less pain when they're hit by a batted ball, but they're potentially justified in it because the coaching staff has a quick trigger for checking on them.
We track injury data more comprehensively than just about anyone. And that allows us to look at injuries in a myriad of ways Here's one example from @vigmanoncampus.bsky.social - Do pitchers act more stoic than others when they're hit by a batted ball? www.sportsinfosolutions.com/2026/04/30/s...
Guess I know who I'm rooting for in Celebrity Jeopardy! The site also updates in a few ways during the draft. I love the Draft Matrix that lays out the distribution of talent at all positions according to our scouts. You can see here the remaining players we tabbed with strong starting grades.

As much as I am a stats guy and built much of the backbone of the analytics on this site, this is definitely my favorite part of our draft site. It gives you a texture for the player pool at a glance and gets us thinking more in terms of tiers than ranks.

This is what you get for expressing certainty, Liam! People poke holes! This was a pretty clear fourth down “go” situation, but I went into how or why you might disagree.

Every year our Total Points player value system seems to decide on its "guy" that is rated surprisingly well. Bo Nix was its guy in 2024, ranking 6th in passing. Through W9, he was 31st in EPA and 3rd in Total Points. After W9, he was 2nd in EPA and 15th in Total Points. Weird year.

Fun news from our football group! We already had an Expected Points model, but it wasn't great at handling late-half (and especially late-game) situations. So we built a new one, which does a LOT better in those spots. Check out the writeup: www.sportsinfosolutions.com/2025/08/13/a...
