The whale research team has been out in the field the last few weeks at a new research site, Swiftsure Bank. Since the Southern Resident killer whales are changing their patterns, we have to as well in order to continue collecting important health data on this endangered species.
Three patients in the last nine months have come to SR3 with gunshot wounds to the head, two from Hood Canal and one from Bellingham.
🚨 Pupping season is underway in Washington State 🚨 The first harbor seal pup of the summer arrived at the Rescue Center on Sunday. The young pup was likely orphaned due to human disturbance. Named Crumpet, he is now receiving treatment at SR3 for malnutrition and pneumonia.

A wet whale sighting from the Des Moines pier! Prior to this week in the Salish Sea, the only time this whale has been documented was in Alaska in 2025.

These Guadalupe fur seals were found severely underweight and dehydrated along the outer coast of Washington State in June. After more than three months of intensive care at SR3, they fully recovered and returned to the ocean again!
