Didier Deschamps bows out as France coach with a defeat that unfortunately speaks to his limitations as a coach. As a solid defensive unit with an exceptional collection of attacking players bolted onto it, France are more than a match for pretty much anyone. But not for a proper team like Spain.

France look bad on the ball because Spain use slow progression phases to set up a good counterpressing structure and keep them from getting organized in possession, this is how it has always worked

Big issue for France is the lack of a central idea to their football beyond ‘keep it tight and give it to the guys up front’. And Spain, with their breezy control of possession, the very worst kind of opposition for a team like that to fall behind against.
