I think the one weakness in Flannigan's CARRIE is that Sue Snell never becomes Carrie's friend. The show is much more concerned about Carrie and Christine, and Sue is sort of on the outside. She barely interacts with Carrie. She interacts more with Christine, appalled by her monstrous bullying.

Almost done CARRIE. I think this is tremendous work from Flannigan. I think he's taken King's work and crafted something even more complex that speaks to modern anxieties and fears. What is most compelling to me is how he uses the decompressed runtime to get into the CRAFTING of monsters.

I was looking to see what the discourse on the new CARRIE show is, and man...people have no imagination. They really just want the same stories told to them in the same way. How does it defeat the purpose to make Carrie White a curious girl who wants to do GOOD in the world...and is STILL bullied?

Another change I'm enjoying about this version of CARRIE is that it's less about Carrie White absorbing cruelty until she explodes, and more about her slowly finding empowerment. She becomes aware of her power in the second episode, and there is something both cathartic and...foreboding in her smile

Flannigan's eye for casting is fucking unmatched. Rahul Kohli, Matthew Lillard, Amber Midthunder, Tim Bagley, Samantha Sloyan...all fantastic in supporting roles, which help to expand the series out over it's 8 episodes to paint a fully picture of the world Carrie White lives in, and speaks to...

Watching Mike Flannigan's CARRIE. I think it was oversold how different Carrie's mom was going to be in this one...she's still a crazy religious fundamentalist with extreme (and very topical) views...and on the surface she seems kinder to Carrie, but it actually makes her abuse more insidious.

Watching DEATH WARRANT (1990) starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, written by David S. Goyer, directed by Deran Sarafian. The film starts STRONG for me with this exchange: JCVD-"I'm going in." LAPD-"You can't...it's against protocol, Burke. This isn't CANADA...we have procedures here!" 🤣

It's the sunk cost fallacy. They've invest MORE MONEY THAN ANY OTHER TV SHOW EVER into this HP thing, but JKR has made it so toxic that they're now panicking and desperately trying to make Fetch! happen...but like trying to put over an unpopular wrestler, it just makes people HATE IT MORE.

People don't believe me, but I'm TELLING you, there MUST be an active campaign strategy happening in media published by WB or other parts of JK's team trying to force HP awkwardly and unnaturally into public consciousness. Certainly from the WB side, I've seen multiple properties doing it already.

While doing my regular grocery shopping, I found DEATH WARRANT (1990) on 4K from MVD Rewind. I saw quite a few Jean-Claude Van Damme movies in the 90s, but I've not seen this one. It looks pretty up my ally, as JCVD plays an undercover cop forced to go into a prison, and it LOOKS pretty great!
