Ever wanted to learn about Wizardry’s Japanese reception throughout history? Read a conversation held between Robert Woodhead and Hitoshi Yasuda as they eat soba? Read stories set in the world of Wizardry? I present the Japanese Wizardry reader: ogrerun.com/the-japanese...
There's an expo about Suikoden / Water Margin in Tokyo, it's extremely interesting. I knew it was popular but wasn't ready for ~400 years of fandom — ppl drawing their favorite heroes, writing crossovers, gender-swap fanfic, porn, annotated editions, "Suikoden for kids", etc... All centuries ago!
Real talk, why half of the remaining games media is in Japan this week but no one can ever find a Japanese dev, consultant, journo or researcher to talk about Japan? Especially when we then get these experts who ignore the well-know fact that Japan has laws which make firing people extremely hard.
Why do Japanese studios suffer fewer layoffs? Because they have smaller teams and don't pay their execs $30m, says one expert. https://bit.ly/4rfqTRG
I feel the rest of the world (Americans included) have no idea of how aggressively the US is pushing to make Latin America into a giant colony. Every day we get news about political interference, increase in military presence, absurd trade demands, online propaganda, Venezuela being pillaged, etc
Gaming is too streamlined nowadays... back in my days even game magazines were hard to read lol
O melhor vídeo da campanha do Lula não é nenhum vídeo da campanha do Lula, é esse aqui 👇🏾
The Rhapsody of Zephy remaster is impressive... they added widescreen, full-voice acting and lots of QoL & cheat options like quest compass, more XP and auto-battle - all optional. Also, the remaster includes the original game! Excellent preservation work! Now to wait for the English translation...
Digimon Card Battler is kinda mid, but once again the UI is extremely cool and on point. Some of the artists also worked before on Digimon World 1, do they clearly knew what they were doing, but I'm surprised there was no overlap with Digimon World 3's artists later.
Exploring a node-based island in an RPG would fix me now. The week has been brutal, Silver week can't come soon enough :P

«La otra historia del videojuego» es mi investigación sobre una cara menos visible del desarrollo retro. Llevo hablando sobre ella en eventos desde 2018 y he decido empezar a recopilarla en varios zines hecho en Decker. Ya tenéis disponible el primer volumen online: isi-cano.itch.io/la-otra-hist...

BTW, when researching places that rented TVs & consoles, I also came across stores in India that rented handhelds - all the way back to the Nintendo Game & Watch in the 1980s! radhikaiyengar.squarespace.com/work/videoga...

Oh, I just found a treasure trove! :D Cruel Games, a game store/locadora de jogos/internet café that has been open since 1994 in Paraná, Brazil... and has photos of all those years! 30 years of people paying per hour to play games, do events, parties & tournaments, from the SNES to modern consoles
Once again @warlockracy.bsky.social delivers the good stuff: www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xOf... One of the few people online who understand that even mediocre & obscure games can be part of a fascinating cultural, political & drama-filled context.

It is often forgotten, but the origins of Bethesda Softworks were rooted in the European homecomputer demoscene, as Julian LeFay, director of Terminator and Daggerfall, grew up with the Amiga in Denmark trying to copy what his demoscene "rival" Sodan was doing.
There's so much cool stuff like this... In Czechoslovakia they were making games as diaries of political protests! If there's any dispute that games are a medium for art & self-expression, it's because most of that vanishes when you reduce the medium's history to a list of products & release dates.
The most fun thing to learn about this scene was the importance of Yugoslavian "New Wave" punk-rock for the computer fans. This music was included on the tapes of "Kontraband 2," an adventure game where players travel in time to visit Yugoslavia in the year 2000 😨 retrospec.sgn.net/users/tomcat...
Following up on this, does anyone have any media recommendations for learning about Yugoslavian history & Josip Broz Tito? Of course I'm hoping for sources that can be read quick & easily but lol. Lmao. Ha. That's not gonna happen, is it? This is fuckin' wild and hilarious and horrifying all at once
I spent the day learning about "The Galaksija," a build-it-yourself 8-bit home computer from 1980's Yugoslavia that was made out of the cheapest, lightest and smallest parts possible to circumvent import bans. Is there any possible way hardcore enthusiasts could build their own PC parts nowadays?
Heads up, the remaster of 1998 Korean classic RPG The War of Genesis: The Rhapsody of Zephyr now has a Steam page: store.steampowered.com/app/5099430/... Korean only for now, but the page says more languages will be added later.

When I talk about games outside the console & PC bubble people often ask for reading recommendations... But I never found a good source on mobile game history... like an overview from Fruit Ninja to Clash of Clans, Candy Crush, Puzzle & Dragons, Pokémon GO, FreeFire, Roblox, Genshin, TFT, etc :/

This is a great example of why you should disable Steam's dumb language filters. Most people are only seeing a random visual novel they never heard about with a couple of reviews. It has over 10,000 reviews. These filters do nothing except lock you in inside a bubble.
Sweet Home now has English, Japanese, Korean and Traditional Chinese localizations! It is a queer visual novel about coming of age in a small Chinese town and has become a sensation since its release last August store.steampowered.com/app/3528450/...
"I miss AMVs" Good news! They're still around! There are 100-ish cons with AMV contests that get hundreds of entries, checking out their playlists is a good place to start bc you get curated, quality stuff. Last weekend there were 8 cons that had contests, here's a 🧵 with finalists playlists:
