Something has happened in the last few months. We went from hearing Western officials describe the US as a challenge, unreliable, unpredictable, and incompetent. Now, Western officials publicly refer to the US as a threat. Carney said it three times in his video speech today.

Under Miliband, the UK seems to be moving toward rectifying its errors in Gaza. Action speaks louder than words, of course, but words often precede action. If genuine and substantive, then it must be welcomed.

12 days ago, the US strategy was to get Iran out of the headlines before the midterms. Economic warfare was going to make military action unnecessary. 7 days later, the US started bombing Larak Island. There is a desire to pacify the situation, but a lack of discipline to stick to that policy.

Iran may opt to escalate before the midterms to maximize the political damage to Iran. That may succeed, but Iran may miscalculate if it thinks a Democratic Congress will restrain Trump. A humiliated Trump may take military risks he has so far eschewed.

Told @cnn that many US presidents have promised to bring US troops home from the Mideast but failed to do so, partly because regional allies did not want to let go of the US security umbrella. The KSA-Tur-Pak pact is in a way them letting go of the US. That's a good thing.
