I'm here as a beginner poet. Also a wife, teen boy-mom, non-practicing physician, rare chronic illness patient, philosophical thinker. ENFJ/INTP Canadian living in Treaty 6 territory and hikes/runs/scrambles the Rocky Mountains in Treaty 7 whenever I can.

Trigger Warning: despair, helplessness, death This poem is really meant for a different target audience, and will be somewhat preaching to the choir. The canary choir, in this case. It is an expression of the human tendency to follow rules but forget why they exist and blame the prophet/victim.

Cool evenings close warm days the golden hour, hours long early autumn: summer's swan song The floods themselves washed away left the old crusty banks as new riverbed under-quilts the secret swing hangs still, over their musty damp There, join I upside-down rise - soar - crown fall - arc - fly

The evenings are cool now with the long golden hours of summer's swan song that is early autumn The floods that have washed themselves away made crusty old banks bow down into fresh lining for the riverbed still damp beneath the secret swing So, I, too ascend soar crown fall upside down all

Third response for how we "use" math every day. As my newly 18 year old son says: engineering = applied physics = applied math. Even if you don't remember, it's good to have What bears needed load? Why do bridges last so long? Answer: triangles! 😃

And since #SomethingEveryday today is #numbers I thought I'd share this here #sestina I wrote whilst teaching Maths to secondary school kids... #maths #poetry #poem #amwriting #blueskypoetry

One of life's most important skills
Is finding the hypotenuse of a triangle,
Using Pythagoras to define X.
The sum of the square; barrage of numbers
As decimals, digits, or fractions;
All for the purpose of nothing.

Complex maths means nothing
To those who never use those skills;
Anything past basic fractions,
Or how many sides make a triangle
Is pointless, to those for whom X
Will never be used as a number.

And though it's cool that any number
Multiplied by zero is nothing;
Defining the value of X
Is a valueless skill
For those outside of finance, fractions,
Or reinventing the triangle.

I'm sick of seeing Triangles;
Hypotenuse of mystery numbers,
What's the point of simplifying fractions
When google will do it for nothing
On those rare times you need the skill;
Hey Alexa, three X is twelve, what's X?

If the number of fucks I have is X;
(Especially pertaining to triangles,)
It doesn't take a lot of skill
To work out that any number
Multiplied by X would be nothing,
Not even worth writing as a fraction.
Who even needs to use fractions?
Except for dividing pizzas by X;
(X is four; you can't divide by nothing,)
And cutting it to perfect triangles
Befitting whatever number.
Cutting pizzas; Now that's a useful skill.
Maths is full of skills; you only use a fraction.
I don't care what number you give to X,
And triangles are good for almost nothing
