Thank you to @emteepoetry.bsky.social for last weeks #PromptCombo and to everyone who contributed. This week it's my turn and I've picked a word with over 300 definitions, so there's no excuse for not having a go 😂 This week I want you to #Stand with me 🙏 #PromptCombo #Stand #Prompt #Poetry

Pine Hill

The hill lifts a green shoulder
to the beckoning sky,
a place where the wind
slips off its heavy coat
and rests awhile.

A small stand of pines
leans into the hush,
dark needles catching
whatever light the day offers,
roots threading stories
through the soil’s marrow,
as it gathers
every seed that splits.

Grass sways in loose stanzas,
a gentle tide
that never seeks the sea,
only the soft rhythm
of the seasons.

In this place,
the future seems approachable
while the trees still stand.

@emteepoetry.bsky.social here is my (rather long) offering for your excellent #Perseverance #PromptCombo prompt. I hope you are enjoying your week as host ♥️ @thepaulconnolly.bsky.social @rfsmith.bsky.social @janpsolivagant.bsky.social #Poetry

Life Carries On

I don’t know why I’m still here.
Some days I think it’s spite.
Others, because the dogs need feeding,
the bin needs taking out,
and the kettle’s already halfway to boiling.

I’ve learned to live in the small things.
The hum of the fridge,
the ache in my knees on cold mornings,
the way the light lands on the washing up
and makes it look like art.

I’ve been broken in places
no one ever saw.
I’ve stitched myself up
with words I never read aloud.

Poems folded into notebook corners.
Unwitnessed outpourings at three a.m.,
while the rest of the house
snores me a soundtrack.

They were never for anyone else.
Just me.
A way to bleed cleanly,
to scream unheard,
to remember I was still here.
I’ve been the girl who left,
the woman who returned.

the daughter who watched her parents fade,
wallpaper curling in the sun.

The wife who watched her husband heal,
a bright dawn after a long night.

The mother who watched her children bloom,
soaring foxgloves dancing in sunlight.

I’ve been the one who stayed, when staying
felt like drowning.

I don’t pretend it’s easy.
but I’ve seen enough storms
through these windows
to know I am safe in my home.
and when the next one comes,
I’ll find my footing.
I always do
