Many students come to the #datascience classroom having mostly used Google Docs and not understanding file directories. To teach where to store & find their files I created this physical directory for my students. Everything was in the large box. I took out folders & files out one by one in class.

There is a large box on a chair with a sign that reads week01-intro-toolkit. Then there are vertically-aligned smaller boxes on a desk that read data, homework, lecture, section. Next to data box there is a paper that reads harvard-art-museum.csv and another paper that reads README.md. Next to the homework box the paper reads hw01-intro-toolkit.qmd. Next to the lecture box the paper reads lec01b-notes.qmd. Next to the section box the three papers read 01-installations.R, 02-test-installations.qmd, 03-bonus.qmd. Below the section box there three papers that read .gitignore, README.md, week01-intro-toolkit.Rproj.

Today I gave a talk on active learning to (mostly) statistics educators. After my talk there was Q&A. Then there was a moderator leading a discussion. By minute 50 nobody has mentioned "AI". I then pointed this out. The most peaceful 50 minutes of my day!!!

Yesterday I called the bookstore to hold a Raymond Carver book for me. I went to pick it up after work. The man in charge was trying to find the book on the hold shelf further away. He shouted "What was the name of the book again?" I said "Will you please be quite, please?" We all laughed.

New cover photo! In grad school a friend gifted me a business card holder as a birthday gift. She had also made and put this business card inside it. Happy to have found it in the photo archives.

A business card sized paper that has a portrait of me on the left and on the right text reads Mine Dogucu CEO of Happiness & Grit

I used to teach computer science majors in my previous job in California. To explain the classroom culture I aim for, I used to say “This is not Silicon Valley and we are not tech bros.”

When I was in grad school, I used confidential data that was sent on a CD with the encryption sent a week later. It had to be stored on a computer that is not plugged to the internet in a room without windows. When I read of AI stealing scientists’ research data/ideas, I think of that data.

In our 6-unit HOA, everyone gets a role. I was assigned the role of "digital organizer / data manager". Guess who will be introduced to README files at the next HOA meeting?

You know the minor teaching details you've on your mind that you can't do in the chaos of the academic year because 1) you're busy 2) they're so unimportant. For me summer is a great time to implement them. Here is my 404 page for my STAT 100 course. It's finally out of my head along with my giggles

STAT 100 web page that reads 404: Missing Data Point
Oops! You found a missing value (NA).
You clicked a link expecting a page, but got a 404 error instead. The page you are looking for is missing.
