In 'Southampton Water,' (1872) Whistler has reduced shipping vessels to ghostly forms in the deepening twilight, the only brightness comes from the reflections of lights and the moon. The setting serves primarily as a vehicle for his interest in the tonal harmonies of darkness.

The Union Chapel is advertising for a part-time archivist - it's a great job for someone. I've spent a lot of time there and the staff are great. The archive starts c.1820 and the postwar sections esp. are crammed with ephemera on all kinds of music and performance.

Andy Burnham has said he wants to “end 40 years of neoliberalism”, which saw a “draining away of economic, social and political power”. One of the chief architects of that process was Nigel Lawson. My contribution to @theipaper.com's 'Who broke Britain?' series ... inews.co.uk/opinion/tory...

The Tory who sold off Britain’s greatest assets – then told us to take back control

Andrew Fisher: Nigel Lawson was a Thatcher acolyte and we are still paying for the ruinous cost of his terrible decisions

Mamdani left soccer field lights on all night…..the lights usually go off at 10pm. They set a camera up and guess what they saw?? Residents playing soccer with their friends ALL NIGHT. One man said how much he loved it because his friends work late and can’t get to the field before 10pm.

"don't cite what you haven't read" remains the basic entry level academic responsibility; & if your discpline "doesn't have that as a norm" then sorry, your discipline needs reforming for this new world. Citations are structural parts of trust and knowledge building, not trinkets or optional extras

Academics and technologists are sounding the alarm about a growing crisis in scholarship as we know it: AI-generated citations of nonexistent papers that have infested real journals. Despite being fake, the sources are widely assumed to be authentic the more they appear in published literature.
