It's important to understand the inherent asymmetry of power in these public hearings. They are dominated by people with the time, energy, and money to fight for the status quo. They are not accurate barometers of public sentiment, nor do they represent the best interests of the city.

Kathryn Davies@kaphryn.bsky.social · 6mo agoAs taxes go up, infrastructure continues to decay, rents rise and homelessness increases, we can look to this tiny constituency of wealthy Calgarians with outsized political influence who would sabotage our city's future to avoid the "irreparable harm" of having a rowhouse on their block.
“Repeal and replace” was a campaign commitment. Making housing more affordable was the goal. It’s time for Mayor Farkas to stand by that commitment, or admit it was never the plan at all.

Today, with one vote, 7 Councillors voted down policy amendments that would have enabled more than 650 homes to be built. 650 homes for 650 families today. Come join us on December 3 and speak to council in support of the Trellis low-income housing project in Bowness. It's a fantastic, thoughtful project.
Thanks to everyone who came out for Non-Market Housing 101! We need to be saying yes... and to all types of housing. It was great to hear from those building affordable housing in our city.
