My second “pilgrimage” to the home of Darwin. This museum perfectly captures the excitement of the scientific discoveries in the 1850s. His garden is a big experimental playground. Highly recommended!!!

Our work on the mechanoresponsiveness of actin is out! While plant microtubules have been extensively studied for their role in mechanobiology, actin has very much been ignored. Here we show that actin responds to cellular deformations within minutes and observed it in Marchantia and Arabidopsis!

Last week I stumbled on a study to ferns in storm drains in 2007. I contacted the author and now I am revisiting the hotspots. Today I found the same species on the same locations as 20 years ago. This is remarkable as spores are unlikely to escape the drains, making this mini-ecosystem very fragile

Seed banks coming alive! This soil was removed from a forest mid March. It is the perfect growth substrate as it came from a forest that had been around for at least two centuries. Currently, such old forest grounds are protected by law, but our local government wants to lift the protection…

My wife recently made a career change to become a primary school teacher. Today she discovered that 20% of her class (12 year olds) did not know whether a swan is a fish or a bird… Something is terribly wrong with our educational program… and it shows how disconnected we are with nature…

A great way to close the #PlantWallK26 days in Prague! The EPCC satellite meeting wrapped up yesterday with a full day of scientific presentations and stimulating discussions on plant cytoskeleton. Many thanks to all contributors and participants, it was a pleasure to see the community in action.

We revisited the evolution of plant actins (last paper was in 1999), with the aim to understand why plants have many actin isoforms and how these isoforms can be functionally different. Strikingly, unlike e.g. the auxin response factors, actins are completely segregated per taxonomic lineage. (1/n)
