PhD title: Taxonomy and phylogeny of the hominins from Fejej (Ethiopia): a comparative
analysis of cranio-dental remains
Background
Since 1992, the Fejej Paleoanthropological Research Project has been conducting field surveys in the
Fejej area, located in the Omo-Turkana Basin in the far south of Ethiopia. These surveys have led to
the discovery of several dozen Pliocene hominin remains, mainly isolated teeth and a few mandibular
fragments. Given their age, but above all their morphology, these remains likely correspond to
Australopithecus anamensis (4.3–3.8 Ma). Their analysis will help to expand the existing body of
knowledge on this species, and in particular on its variation. This study will enable a broader
discussion of the origins of the genus Australopithecus, its possible relationship with Ardipithecus
ramidus (4.8–4.3 Ma), the links between Au. anamensis and Au. afarensis (3.8–3 Ma), and the
possibility of intraspecific variation within Au. anamensis across the Omo-Turkana basin.
Aims of the thesis
1. I n-depth and comprehensive morphological and morphometric analysis of the craniodental remains
from the Fejej area.
2. Analysis of the contribution of Pliocene specimens from the Fejej region to the morphological and
metric variation in the teeth of Au. anamensis, in comparison with dental variations in Ar. ramidus
and Au. afarensis.
3. Intra-basin comparisons of fossils from the Omo-Turkana (specimens from the south-west of the
basin versus specimens from the north-east).
4. Cladistic analyses.
5. Interpretation of all the results, whether intraspecific (including any intra-basin differences) or
interspecific, from an evolutionary perspective, incorporating available palaeoenvironmental data
(fauna, isotopic analyses, sedimentology, etc.) available, either through intra-team discussions within
the Fejej Paleoanthropological Research Project, or via the literature for other sites, particularly those

The PhD student will be based at UMR 7268 ADES in Marseille, within the Bones team.
Several periods of mobility will take place at UMR 5288 CAGT in Toulouse.
International mobility will be necessary for data collection (Ethiopia and Kenya at a minimum),
potential fieldwork (Ethiopia) and presentations at international meetings. Please note that funding for this PhD is not yet guaranteed at this stage. It will be subject to a
competitive selection process within Doctoral School 251 at Aix-Marseille University (https://ecole
doctorale-251.univ-amu.fr/fr). The candidate must submit an application comprising a written
dossier, followed by an oral interview (20 candidates for 10 funding places), which will take place on
1 and 2 July 2026.

End of May: selection of a candidate

État de l’art et problématique
Le peuplement de Sahul - plateau continental dont les parties émergées lors des périodes de bas niveau marin
sont aujourd'hui l'Australie, la Tasmanie et la Nouvelle-Guinée - représente la première migration vers un
espace insulaire réalisée par Homo sapiens. Si le contexte chronologique de la traversée depuis l’Asie du Sud
Est commence à être précisé, les conditions techniques, environnementales, climatiques, démographiques et
sociales restent encore largement conjoncturelles.
Les premières traces d'occupation humaine en Australie remontent à environ 65 000 ± 6000 ans sur le site de
Madjedbebe dans le Territoire du Nord [1,2]. Les données génétiques indiquent que les Aborigènes
d'Australie et les Papous de Nouvelle-Guinée descendent d'une même population ancestrale, qui aurait
migré depuis l'Asie du Sud-Est [3]. Cette migration semble s'être produite en un seul événement majeur, suivi
d'une divergence génétique rapide et d'un isolement relatif avec peu de flux génétique ultérieur entre les
groupes [3,4]. Une étude de modélisation démographique-écologique propose que la colonisation de
l'ensemble du Sahul s'est faite rapidement, en 156 à 208 générations humaines [5].
Les perspectives archéologiques ouvertes par cette mise en évidence récente de traversée de haute mer sans
vision directe des côtes à atteindre sont majeures : -paléoanthropologie : les données génétiques concordent pour placer les ancêtres des Aborigènes dans la
première vague de dispersion très rapide d’Homo sapiens hors d’Afrique (~70–75 000 ans) [3, 4, 6]. - paléogéographie et variations climatiques : en période glaciaire, la baisse du niveau marin jusqu’à – 120 m
modifie profondément le tracé et la morphologie des côtes, les distances à parcourir et les conditions de
navigation. Si l’hypothèse d’une traversée lors d’un épisode de bas niveau marin est privilégiée par la
communauté scientifique car elle réduit les distances,

elle n’est pas démontrée jusqu’à présent et les avantages
d’un haut niveau marin en termes de navigation : espaces lagunaires, possibilité du cabotage… n’ont pas été
testées. - démographie : la colonisation d’un territoire ainsi que la pérennisation de l’occupation demandent un nombre
minimum d’individus et une diversité génétique et sexuelle qui varient selon les organisations sociales. Une
seule étude pour l’Australie est disponible qui privilégie un scénario d’au moins 1000 individus arrivant
simultanément ou dans un temps très court [7]. Ce scénario demande à être testé. - anthropologie des techniques : la maîtrise de la navigation dans des zones maritimes affectées de courants
puissants nécessite des compétences techniques importantes pour la conception et la construction
d’embarcations en capacité de se déplacer en haute mer sur plusieurs jours, d’être dirigées efficacement et de
pouvoir embarquer plusieurs individus et les vivres nécessaires. Si ces embarcations en matériaux organiques
n’ont pas laissé de témoins archéologiques, elles témoignent de compétences techniques et d’une organisation
artisanale (apprentissages, transmissions, expérimentations/innovations…) qui n’étaient pas identifiées
jusqu’ici. - contexte social : le franchissement avec succès d’espaces de haute mer par une population suffisamment
nombreuse et diversifiée pour faire souche sur Sahul implique une organisation sociale plus complexe que ce
que les données archéologiques classiques permettent d’inférer. Cette complexité apparaît comme
particulièrement précoce dans cette zone géographique.
