Do not scrap BBC Radio 4 Extra

The proposal to scrap a radio station which contains no news or current affairs represents a misjudgement in a world in which entertainment - even escapism - is more necessary than ever.

👏 Caroline Voaden: "What we got was an eye-watering spike in the cost of doing business with the EU. Mountains of paperwork and crippling red tape have pushed many South Devon fishers, shellfish exporters and farmers to the brink, and overall, Brexit has reduced UK exports to the EU by 12%."

A new Bloomberg analysis shows ~3,000 MTCO2-e of extra US power pollution between 2025-2035 thanks to data centre growth. That is: = 84 new coal plants /yr = 33k lost jobs globally = 1.2m more ppl pushed into unlivable climate

Data-center power demand could keep US emissions above the Paris-aligned pathway to 2035, with BNEF scenarios holding around 4,000 MMtCO2e while the Paris trajectory falls toward roughly 2,500 MMtCO2e.Infographic comparing 3 gigatons of CO2 to familiar and national equivalents—e.g., 924M gas cars driven one year, billions of flights, 33B kg of beef, thousands of coal and gas power plants, 2B hectares of forest protected, and 2024 emissions percentages for several countries.Custom Scenario climate calculator showing 3,000 MtCO2 causing +0.0014°C additional warming and estimating 145.6 million heavy-labour hours lost annually, with circular icons for impacts like crop loss, heat stress, coral and glacier loss.Climate impact dashboard showing 3,000 MtCO2 selected, resulting additional warming +0.0014°C and a highlighted Climate Niche effect projecting 1.2 million additional people outside historically habitable temperatures (9.5 billion population scenario).

Socks and sandals are nothing new! These well-preserved woollen socks from Egypt feature a split-toe design allowing them to be worn with thonged sandals to keep toes cosy in chilly weather some 1,500 years ago! 🩴🧦 V&A Museum 📷 by me #Archaeology

My photo shows a pair of ancient red woollen socks from Egypt, viewed from the front, and displayed side by side against a cream background. The socks have a knitted texture, made using the technique known as nålbindning, sometimes called knotless netting or single needle knitting. They have an ankle-length cuff with an overlapping slit at centre front. They have a distinctive split for the big toe, designed to wear with thonged sandals. Excavated in the late 1800s from the cemetery of ancient Oxyrhynchus, a Greek colony on the Nile in Egypt. Dated to 300–500 AD, Part of the collections of the V&A Museum in London.

It’s gratifying that this unfortunately necessary book has become a become a best-seller in Canada. My part was to help expose the trans-national far right networks that sponsor denial, & their tactics of distortion, distraction & cherry picking uofmpress.ca/books/truth-...
