I have a pretty good guess that it's meant to be kinky counterculture fashion in the context it's shown in. You know, akin to BDSM.
Big same, Like canon is more than likely not going to explore this the same way fandom will, so expectations have been THOROUGHLY managed for the show so whatever way they interact will be JUST fine as long as they interact which we know they will. Fandom and silly merch drops nourish me JUST fine.
