After 11 years, today is my final day at the Naval Academy. Working with hundreds of amazing midshipmen has been the honor of a lifetime, and I’ve learned so much from them. In August, I start my new job at the University of Minnesota. There is a lot of First Amendment work ahead!

A federal judge just granted a preliminary injunction blocking West Point’s restrictions on faculty publications and teaching. The judge found that the policies likely violate the First Amendment.

I’m thrilled to announce that I’m joining the faculty of the University of Minnesota, where I will be the Silha Professor of Media Ethics and Law and the Director of the Silha Center for the Study of Media Ethics and Law.
In 2022, I published a book about the importance of anonymity to free speech. I knew that anonymity was under attack globally but never imagined its collapse would be this fast.
When we look back at the death of the open and free global internet, the legislative and judicial developments of 2026 will play a starring role.

Countries routinely use hate speech laws to punish political dissent and criticism of public officials.
1diane.bsky.social@1diane.bsky.social · last yr.Hate speech is regulated in many countries democracies in the world, and as far as I can tell, it does not impair or impede free speech. Unlike some other kinds of speech, this is not difficult to classify.
