Seismicity in the LRE study area between 1975 and 2023 (Reamer & Hinzen 2004). Circles represent earthquakes colour-coded in time and triangles indicate seismic stations colour-coded by network. Red lines denote mapped faults (Gold et al. 2017). Cross indicates proposed location for a test geothermal power plant in Weisweiler. Municipalities (squares) are included for reference. Inset map includes additional seismic stations used for mainshocks prior to 1999 because of event-based (non-continuous) data availability in the study area (cross-hatched triangles, inset map only). 🌍 Scripps seismologists have been monitoring an earthquake swarm that started on July 11. This new swarm is located in the same region as the previous 2005 and 2021 swarms. The spatial footprint of the sequence of quakes in each swarm is confined to a relatively small area. 🗺️: @debi-kilb.bsky.social
