VIPAPASTORAL
Even as eggs are jellied
by pesticides, a new flu

leapfrogs into their flock,
birds catch an updraft and

just float. Once, an orchid
shaped itself to resemble

a female bee so male bees
would visit, and with those

bees extinct, the orchid's
portrait remains. Threads

of mycelium bridge one
oak to another, and when

blight comes, they reach
out. Yes, though our own

whirl lasts but a dizzying
moment, we catch all this

light as we fall like gold
leaves to the forest floor.

Not even the end
of January 2025,
and you're already

on your knees, hair
cut for the first time
since holidays with

your parents. You
always grow it out
for them, the South,

rural gas stations.
But now, it's shorn
again, short as you

like it, flanneled
shoulders flecked
with half-moons.

Time is amenable
once again, so you
bend over the tub's

lip as I wash these
black ringlets shot
through with stars.

hover, crayfish lift
claws below, but

such shimmering
light tires the eyes.

Memories must be
themselves only—

a TB-vaccine scar
dances on your

shoulder as you
slather oysters in

chipotle butter,
and I open wine,

the years rolling
over us like fog.

THE EGRETS

In traffic on the way
back to the hospital,
the storm breaks over
the Bay to our right,

and between slashes
of rain, their white V
rises from marshland,
keeps pace, fighting

wind until it vanishes
over the water. Later,
rain streaks intensive
care room windows

and we imagine long
legs lowered into mud
to flush out minnows,
a beak’s sudden snap.

There’s no equation.
Nothing is given, so
nothing can be taken
away: Tangle of tubes.

Mass of roots. A bud
opens. Someone dies.
Great birds take wing.
