Things We Want Trans People To Know (Against the EHRC)

By Marco None of this is your fault. You are not a problem, no matter what any transphobe or politician says. You are loved by so many people, more than you could ever know. You are not alone and never will be; there will always be someone out there who will stand by your side. You have the same right to life as any cis person: don’t let the transphobes stop you from going out and living it. You are a unique and wonderfully made human being: you are a gift to this world. Look for others who are struggling: think, how can you help them? Be aware of your privileges, unlearn your biases, and use your voice to uplift the most marginalised. Love, uplift and protect trans people of global majority, disabled trans people, and everyone with intersecting identities. Be there for trans kids. Show them that they will live a happy life as themselves, and help them through a hostile school system. You are not powerless and your voice will always matter. Speak out for our rights, and for the rights of all other oppressed communities and peoples. We are not the first to go through this darkness, and we will not be the last. Look to our history and dream of potential futures. In every way you can and that is safe for you to do so, live your life and resist this ‘guidance’. We will survive and thrive through this, as long as we are there for each other. This is not the end of our story. Our bodies are change incarnate, and we have always carved beauty out of oppression. Remember those before us who have made life out of death, and joy out of destruction. Learn to be like them. Someday, the fascists ruining this world will die. We will live on, and we will still be here on that day. We want you there for those days. You will always have the power to fight for a better future with your actions, no matter what the government may try to do. Is there someone you can spend time with, a group you can take action with, or a cause you can share today? No matter what anyone else says, you deserve a happy life as yourself. You make the world better just by being yourself. We need you, trans person. Keep on living. Do what you can to fight each day, even if that is just existing, and it will always be enough. - By Marco None of this is your fault. You are not a problem, no matter what any transphobe or politician says. You are loved by so many people, more than

'I found this a moving aspect of the exhibition - that the kinds of questions I've asked myself about my own identity and desire were being interrogated in an exhibition in a major museum in a city like New York which has an incredibly rich queer history'. 🎤 @metmuseum.org

Queering the Medieval Past

What can we learn by turning a queer lens onto the study of medieval art? Three art historians discuss Spectrum of Desire, an exhibition at New York's Cloisters.

The only taxidermied blue whale in the world, 1865 CE, now housed at the Natural History Museum in Sweden. The public was allowed to enter the whale up until a couple was found having sex inside it. Now the whale’s jaws are opened only for special occasions, such as Swedish election days.

Some historical background to the fires in southwestern France, drawing on reading I did for my 2019 book about the moorlands, and lamenting the deeply depressing reality that we have known many of the causes of this ecological disaster for 150years 🗃️ williamgpooley.wordpress.com/2026/07/30/u...

Unintentional Arson

The fires in southwestern France are an appalling demonstration of the reality of climate change in 2026. But this is not the first ecological devastation in the region, and the role of human actio…

Avocados come in 2 varieties - A-types start each day female and switch to male midday. B-types do the reverse. In work just published from the last chapter of my PhD, we show this system evolved 40+million yrs ago and is regulated by alleles of 1 transcription factor www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

This morning I had the pleasure of guesting on an upcoming episode of BBC Science Focus Magazine's fabulous Instant Genius podcast, for which I was sent this fancy microphone! Here are two photos from the session: one of me setting up, and the other of me in action during the recording. 🌈🎙️

Selfie taken at my desk. A large microphone is in the foreground. I'm wearing a shirt with brightly coloured vertical stripes. In the background are bookshelves and a colourful metal gecko.B&W photo of a young Judy Garland in a low-cut black dress. She's singing behind a large microphone.
