This walk #HumanistHeritage walk introduces some of the key freethinkers and reformers who have shaped, and been shaped by, Cardiff. These include names like Aneurin Bevan, the architect of the NHS, and lesser known figures like Millicent Mackenzie, a pioneer for women’s rights and education.

Rather than allowing humanists to contribute to Radio 4's Thought for the Day, the BBC's current format requires all speakers to frame political and current affairs commentary through a religious or scriptural lens. Yet half of the UK is non-religious so why not let us speak?

It's also true that some children will never hear that it's OK, or even totally normal, to be non-religious. Some may even hear that to be non-religious is to be somehow amoral. Promoting an understanding of humanism in RE combats this view by presenting it as a lived moral philosophy.

It also means children learn about views beyond those of their family – perhaps those of their friends, teachers, or people in their community and neighbours. Understanding religion and belief encourages tolerance, not fear. Ignorance always encourages the latter. That's important, too.
