Do insects feel pain or is it just a reflex? We found that GABAergic signalling modulates bumblebee nocifensive responses. A centrally acting drug reduced these behaviors and altered brain gene expression, suggesting modulation of the central nervous system rather than a simple peripheral reflex

A very nice and digestible coverage of my latest paper ! 🐝🔀
A flashing light disrupted honey bee reversal learning in opposite ways. Bees trained with a time gap between scent and reward stopped responding altogether, unlike bees trained with overlap. doi.org/hb49qj

Influence of the alarm pheromone on olfactory behavior and neurophysiology in the honey bees
In vertebrate and invertebrate species, alarm signals can rapidly suppress food-related behaviors, triggering a fight-or-flight response. Likewise, in honey bees, exposure to alarm pheromone component...

Last Sunday, we had a blast at Day of Science! Truly amazing to see kids (and parents) having fun with Biology. We made bee hotels, gave some info and got them acquainted with some common social insect species in Belgium. @kuleuven.bsky.social @twenseleers.bsky.social
🐝 We're currently advertising three PhD projects to study bees at Bristol University, UK. Two focus on foraging behaviour, ecology & nutrition, one on parasitic bees and their impact on indigenous stingless beekeeping in Peru. Feel free to share: www.socialinsect-research.com/opportunitie...
