After many years of campaigning from Galop and others, the law has officially changed to classify hate crimes against LGBT+ and disabled people as aggravated offences – making them equal to crimes motivated by racial and religious hate. Today's announcement by the government is a sad instance of othering and even worse of scapegoating vulnerable people. The government worries us. We work hard to obtain rights for people that are otherwise marginalised as that helps integration and settlement more than othering.
