There isn’t really a way to fully express how monumental a barrier money is to so many early careers. Workshops? Materials? Classes? Commutes? Broken equipment? UPGRADING equipment? Those goddamned subscriptions to everything? SO many amazing talent are held back, only from inability to afford it.
In the VO industry we have long cautioned about what happens when the jobs newer talent could cut their teeth/build a savings on - incidentals, background roles, “world filler”, etc. - all disappear because of AI just dotting in the gaps. Now we’re seeing it happen to every other creative industry.
Early on in my career, this is what helped me save up money for my big move to California. $25 here. $50 there. Short blurbs for a local car seller. A VOICEMAIL for a small company. Either it bought my meals for the day or it went towards a 4-year “moving out” fund. Now the small jobs don’t exist.
