This work was made possible by an NSF grant to Amanda Hund and colleagues. The experiments were conducted at @bamfieldmsc.bsky.social in our excellent stickleback lab (and available for use by others)
For years I've explained in seminars that fibrosis is strictly induced by S.solidus exposure. But when we raised stickleback in the lab at @bamfieldmsc.bsky.social we were in for a surprise: There is constitutive variation in fibrosis, and it explains most of the variation in fibrosis in nature!

Restoration efforts require interdisciplinary approaches, and genomics can fill in gaps in understanding kelp biodiversity and resilience. As Dr. Jasmin Schuster puts it, “Restoration isn’t just about replacing what’s lost. We need to rebuild kelp forests that can thrive in tomorrow’s oceans.”
Kelp forests are vital to ocean health but are declining due to climate change and other pressures. Genomics is helping researchers restore BC kelp by identifying what to plant and where so these ecosystems can recover and thrive. Read more: https://www.genomebc.ca/blog/kelp-is-on-the-way/
BMSC hosts many interdisciplinary courses offering #experientiallearning to students from science, to art, law, and more. Check out this feature from @ualbertalaw.bsky.social that highlights their Ocean Law and Policy course that happens at our station! www.ualberta.ca/en/law/about...
The dolphins were scouting out the salmon, Dr. Andrew Trites said. “They were sort of spread out and pinging through the water in a much broader area than what the whales can search — and the whale was listening.” www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

Each #kelp population carries its own genetic mix shaped by local conditions. When forests shrink or become isolated they can lose diversity, slowing recovery. Our research shows mixing individuals from different regions may support resilience. Dive deeper: kelprescue.org/publications
