Instead of buying a fly trap I have a cellar spider who lives in an unused corner of my house. Harmless and free pest control!
Spiders and snakes are by and large harmless pest control agents who work completely for free. What a magnificent animal.

He's doing an escape.
A few minutes after this I got a half hour nosebleed and had to cancel class. Truly a cursed group of animals.
I asked ChatGPT to solve early actinopterygian phylogeny and my computer went up in flames.

Colin Wright is a deeply evil person yes. He is also terrible at science and lacks a basic understanding of biology. I sincerely doubt the man can distinguish a spider from his own right hand.
Can't believe that disgruntled spider biologist Colin Wright would make something up, that's totally out of character
Bayesian when the uniform prior that treats fish the size of the sun and electrons as the same likelihood leads to an inconclusive result.
In the nicest possible way I hope this guy finds bugs in his food.

Given today’s news math researchers are going to start doing everything by hand again and locking their notebooks up in cabinets blessed by the pope.
Western Michigan is a great educational institution and football program, they deserve fair treatment under the clearly stated rules of replay. Glad they are standing up for themselves. getsomemaction.com/news/2026/9/...

In an effort to get more steps I have combined two hobbies: walking and coin collecting. You’d be surprised how many coins are just laying around in parking lots. However, the issue is now trying to explain why I’m wandering around the parking lots at work…just trying to be healthier!
Couldn’t agree more. The skill that will last any student the longest is being able to solve problems and adapt to new information. We must also remember that billion dollar industries exist to prey on people without critical thinking skills.
My pedagogical philosophy begins with the premise that I am helping students become better thinkers than they were before and that doing this effectively will best prepare them for whatever life throws at them, intellectually, economically, and otherwise.
Expanding my library for vet med students. Excited to expand my anatomy knowledge, which outside of the lateral part obscure Paleozoic fishes isn’t that great.
This is the only reconstruction I will recognize from now on
After last night’s result I’m happy to announce that a second is now 9,192,631,771 periods of radiation corresponding to the transition between two hyperfine levels of the ground state of a cesium-133 atom, rather than the original 9,192,631,770. Update your clocks accordingly.
Researchers at the University of Michigan have determined that a minute is actually composed of 61 seconds. Amazing stuff.

To no one’s surprise Michigan gets an assist from their twelfth man to beat Western.

You know, just doing author stuff, throwing on a cheesy horror movie to entertain myself while I sign hundreds of book plates for the cool people who’ve pre-ordered Tyrant Lizard Queen.
Your pencil sees more than your eyes. The process of illustrating an animal is critical to understanding it.
Also, having done some simple illustrations and worked with illustrators myself, the *process* of illustrating new taxa often reveals important data for the underlying science, and helps clarify the writing process. What matters/what doesn't is an important decision in illustration.
Just learned that Tanyrhinichthys, a fish I re-described (with Lauren Sallan, JP Hodnett, and Spencer Lucas) is available in Minecraft with the Prehistoric Nature mod. This is perhaps the greatest honor of my career.
Very very sad day. How does this happen?
I feel like I’m going to throw up
When someone publishes a paper re-inventing taxonomic practice that has existed since the 1940’s.
Being a fish paleontologist is fun because I get to say things like "most of these animals were described before computers were invented"
Lecture today on the history of evolutionary thought and sadly the history of scientific racism, and how it’s deeply intertwined with the science. It really broke my heart to have to explain that the same evil ideas are still championed today, albeit in (barely) disguise.
