In advance of the UK Government's Spring Statement (officially the Spring Forecast), being given by Rachel Reeves, Chancellor of the Exchequer , Neil Middleton, Railfuture Vice Chair said:
“Rail is much more than a cost to HM Treasury – it is a key enabler for the government’s wider policy objectives – just think of East West Rail and the objectives for the Oxford-Cambridge Arc. It was great to see today’s announcement that Chiltern Railways have been confirmed as operator for stage 1 of EWR and services will start later this year. Rail helps kickstart economic growth and breakdowns the barriers to opportunities, so improved rail performance and connectivity help achieve wider objectives such as the government’s Plan for Change and can bring in more fare revenue as well, so reducing costs paid by the taxpayer. We have one key desire tomorrow – to see evidence that the government sees the railway as much more than just a subsidy payment.”
