One of the first genocide scholars to recognise Israel’s genocide. Author of ‘The New Age of Genocide’, and ‘What is Genocide?’. Sociology/IR professor, IBEI Barcelona/University of Sussex. martinshaw.org, martinshawx.substack.com

I’ve written a piece for History Workshop reflecting on mass activism and direct action - as Marral says, we first met when a group of members of the late 1960s LSE Socialist Society supported today’s Palestine activists in the School, who were under threat from the LSE authorities.

A pleasure to publish Martin’s reflections for this series! Fitting that we first met as a result of his and other 1960s LSE activists’ support for the LSE encampment.

My new article explains what Burnham and Miliband should really be doing about Israel—breaking the UK’s alliance with the genocidal state, not pleading with it to change course; sanctioning the state, not just the settlers and individual ministers. tribunemag.co.uk/2026/08/the-...

The UK Must Break With Israel

No more piecemeal measures. The government should sanction the genocidal occupying state and renounce the UK-Israel relationship.

“What the physical record shows is a military that could confine its violence to a single room when it chose to, and elsewhere chose otherwise.” - Israel discriminated between Christian and other areas in the degree of “precision” it used in targeting.

In our latest @newlinesmag.bsky.social investigation, @baydoun.nl and I used site visits, spatial analysis, testimonies and interviews with military and legal experts to present an anatomy of five Israeli "precision strikes" in Lebanon.

Raz Segal and I were the first genocide scholars to recognise Israel’s genocide in Gaza. Unlike me, he paid a serious price for speaking out, losing a prestigious position that he had just been offered. But now, 2 years later, he has won financial compensation. www.theguardian.com/us-news/ng-i...

An Israeli professor lost a prestigious US job offer after speaking out on Gaza. Now the university is paying him $250,000

The University of Minnesota withdrew an offer for Raz Segal to lead its Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies after an organized campaign against his hiring

Brilliant talk, inc. plenty of excellent reflections on so-called subaltern genocides. Also agree that the term genocide should not be dumped. Now I wonder, if genocide is indeed part of a historical colonial continuum, what criteria do we use to date its actual start? @martinshaw.bsky.social

I wrote in detail about ‘Why Andy Burnham Must Break With Israel' for Byline Times. Gaza is the sharpest edge of Starmer’s domestic as well as international legacy. Fail to address it, and Burnham could end up as the UK’s Kamala Harris. bylinetimes.com/2026/07/03/w...

'Why Andy Burnham Must Break With Israel'

The likely incoming Prime Minister must break with Keir Starmer's "morally bankrupt" legacy on Gaza in order to restore his party's reputation with the public, argues genocide scholar Martin Shaw

bylinetimes.com

Andy Burnham (in the Guardian) burning his bridges by failing to express a clear moral condemnation of Israel. His weasel words suggest he could be Labour's Kamala Harris, needlessly alienating the left and Muslim voters that are needed to defeat Farage - as they were to beat Trump.

ICC prosecutor requests further warrants against Israeli ministers: ‘the charges against Smotrich include forced displacement as a crime against humanity and war crime, the transfer of Israel’s own population as a war crime, and persecution and apartheid as crimes against humanity’

I wrote for the Berlin Review about the long shadow of genocide in Europe's crisis. Drawing on the experience of when Europeans confronted US power in the 1980s, I argue that we need movements from below to challenge our complicit elites. blnreview.de/en/ausgaben/...

Europe’s complicity has not only sustained the genocide of Palestinians, but also triggered a crisis of political legitimacy. If any political or moral credibility is to be salvaged, a different movem...

‘The U.S. and Israel have employed so-called “double-tap strikes” in their campaign in Iran. The attacks, which involve aircraft bombing a site and then conducting further strikes, show a callous disregard for civilians by the US & Israel, & may show a pattern of seeking to inflict harm on Iranians’

Analysis by @ntabrizy.bsky.social and myself for @newlinesmag.bsky.social reveals that the U.S.-Israeli coalition has employed so-called double tap strikes, showing a callous disregard for civilians and a pattern of airstrikes seeking to inflict reckless harm on Iranians.
