Hey #iteachphysics folks! Webinar next week on Agentic AI! 📅 Thursday, February 19, 2026 🕰️ 8pm EST / 7pm CST / 6pm MST / 5pm PST 👤 Duncan Carlsmith (Wisconsin-Madison) AND the Summer Leadership Workshop is open for applications! 📅 June 22–26, 2026 📍UW-River Falls mailchi.mp/f0029c583691...

And a nice write-up in @natureportfolio.nature.com news: www.nature.com/articles/d41... "The researchers found a way to encode these different parameters into a single ytterbium ion trapped in a vacuum using pulsating electric fields..." ⚛️ 🧪

Single atom acts as a quantum computer and simulates molecules

A trapped ytterbium ion can be used to simulate complex changes in the energy levels of organic molecules interacting with light.

Interesting new result from Ting Rei Tan and Ivan Kassal @sydney.edu.au Physics and Chemistry). Simulating how molecules change with time using quantum computers (technical term "mixed qudit-boson simulations")... on the path to quantum chemistry. theconversation.com/australian-r... ⚛️ #Physics ⚛️

A recent paper led by collaboration members Yoonsoo Kim and Elias Most (both at Caltech) is in @aasnova.org today! This work explores the formation of strongly magnetized "monster" shocks and a transient "black hole pulsar" state from mergers of a magnetized neutron star and a black hole. ⚛️🧪🔭

Monster shocks and a “pulsar-like” black hole phase might form when a black hole collides with a neutron star. Could this cosmic clash produce observable electromagnetic signals? aasnova.org/2025/05/12/b... @caltech.edu 🔭🧪

Our community flourished because of 3 NSF grants we earned 10 years ago. We were awarded another one to grow the community and move us to sustainability without federal support. Each day that passes brings worry that we won't be able to do so. #iteachphysics #physicsksy #astrosky #SaveNSF

Exclusive: National Science Foundation staff were told today that the agency’s 37 divisions—across all eight directorates—are being abolished and the number of programs within those divisions will be drastically reduced.
