Sian Berry MP

Green MP for Brighton Pavilion since 2024. Elected to challenge Labour in power at all levels of Govt since 2014. She/her. Promoted by Chris Williams on behalf of the Green Party at PO Box Green Party, London, SE1P 6YL

Today marks the third anniversary of the horrific October 7 attacks. In pursuit of peace and justice for Israelis and Palestinians, today I remember those lost, hurt, and taken on that harrowing day.

I wanted to speak on an amendment to motion EO2 Zionism is racism at Green Party conference today, but was not called on. I’ve copied over what I would have said in the next posts. I was heartbroken this amendment fell and that the vote went against providing this protection for Jewish members.

Text of amendment 3 to motion EO2 Zionism is racism

Safeguarding Jewish party membership

This amendment is to mitigate the possiblity that this motion could be used to achive indirect discrimination against practising Jews

Add after actions 2. ADD

This motion shall not be used to pressure, proscribe or discipline members based on affiliation with Jewish community institutions, such as synagogues, community centres or denominational groups, that describe themselves as Zionist or used to discipline or sanction Jewish members for expressing views that would be non sanctionable if expressed by non Jewish members such as (such as support for a binational state, or two state solution).

To Jewish members of the Green Party: Assurances, from the motion proposers, that they had no intention for Jewish members to feel targeted for their beliefs or associations have been clear. And if anyone else does try to use it in this way, I will be there for you with my solidarity and support.

Statement reads: As Greens, we will always uphold universal human rights.

We will never tolerate any form of discrimination or harassment.

We will continue to stand in opposition to genocide, ethnic cleansing, apartheid and the illegal occupation.

We will continue to call out the heinous crimes of the Netanyahu government.

And we will continue to work to ensure that the Green Party is an anti-racist party in every way.

We know there is no conflict between supporting the rights of Palestinians and the rights of Jewish people.

With love and respect to every colleague and fellow member, here is my personal view on motion E02, which Greens are set to debate tomorrow as part of our afternoon plenary.

Time and time again when I'm knocking on doors people tell me they've still got their kids living at home with them. The extreme cost of housing is putting lives on hold across this country. We need an emergency brake on rents. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

In his speech to his party's conference, the Green leader will frame housing as a key issue of generational fairness.

I'm so very sad to hear of the death of Esther Ranzen who played an important role in reuniting me with Nicky Winton - the man who saved my life. It's so desperately sad that she couldn't choose assisted dying as was her wish.

Oh I could not be sadder at this news. An incredible campaigning broadcaster. I remember vividly the impact of Childline when I was very young, and recently Dame Esther was a dedicated supporter of the assisted dying work I was involved in. Huge love to all her family. www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/cq...

Her family paid tribute to her in a statement calling her the "most wonderful mother" and a "cherished grandmother".

I have said before and will again: any electoral reform commission must NOT rule out a change of system BEFORE the next election if needed. We cannot risk a minority vote handing a huge majority to any party that would take a shredder to democracy itself.

Encouraging words from the PM on social housing but STILL no new funding for councils to buy existing homes at scale. Fixing the devastation of Right to Buy cannot be achieved just through sluggish building. Time for Buy the Supply. Sign my petition: you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/fu...

Fund Councils to Buy the Supply of Council Homes

We urgently need to replenish our decimated council housing stock, and part of the answer is real funding for councils to Buy the Supply. Over 169,000 children are homeless and living in overcrowded ...

As we have recently lost some of our amazing LBGTQ+ venues - I wanted to share some good news. The fabulous community hub, the Ledward Centre is now back open - such an important asset for our city and was great to drop in and see them over Pride weekend!

I wrote to the EHRC chair about how she must monitor the impact of her code of practice on trans and nonbinary rights, and inclusive organisations. It is her statutory duty to do so and is vital if we are to make legal gender recognition for trans people a reality again in the UK. buff.ly/AhfkaJr

A third runway for Heathrow in the face of a climate emergency? The Government's own climate advisors say no! Ministers must withdraw support for this reckless plan that only benefits wealthy airport bosses, and support the buses and trains we use every day instead.
