New study out in NEE, led by Stanislas Rigal: Even more effort needed to reverse negative trends in bird and butterfly populations.

Are current species conservation policies enough? New study indicates that common bird and common butterfly species across Europe are set to keep declining in the coming decades. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

We organize a symposium on #biodiversity, #citizenScience, species knowledge and conservation in October (in German language). Will be cool. Join us! Info and registration: www.fokus-vielfalt.de/tagung

Out now: Very nice special issue in #BiologicalConservation: Conservation of Palaearctic steppes and semi-natural grasslands: challenges and solutions.

🎉Paper just published! We used Bayesian dynamic occupancy models to assess the effect of accessibility, hunting and other landscape variables on the occupancy, persistence and colonisation of eleven terrestrial and arboreal species. @consbiogoe.bsky.social @matthiaswaltert.bsky.social

New research from Cameroon suggests that "remote” rainforest areas aren’t safe refuges from hunting 🌴🌎 Hunters reach deeper than expected, meaning conservation plans must factor in human access, not just habitat 💭 🔗 doi.org/10.1111/1365...

Can we "perceive" how species populations change? No. Need #structured #biodiversity monitoring. Cool new paper led by Catalina Munteanu, suggesting widespread shifting baselines and change blindness in biodiversity experience: journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...

Uphill shifts in tropical forest birds on a Caribbean island - BSc thesis of Filibert Heim now published: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/... Nice collaboration led by @steffopp.bsky.social at @vogelwarte.bsky.social, wíth many people on Montserrat.

NEW PAPER in #ornithology shows that #tropical #forest birds are moving higher up the mountain due to #climate change: buff.ly/5DQBiZN

How do forest disturbance, post-disturbance succession and temperature variability affect #moth and #butterfly diversity? Led by Imran Khaliq, we fitted 20,000 species distribution models to #CitizenScience data from across Germany and predicted responses: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

New paper! Determinants of terrestrial and limnic species richness in Germany: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.... Some first evidence for #hotspot patterns of certain taxonomic groups, but also clearly a lot to do: spatial #samplingbias doesn't go unnoticed, even in birds. Nice collab.

Another very nice new paper emerging from Rodel's PhD - amazing dataset🐘⬇️

New publication in Conservation Science and Practice 📢🎉 How are large mammals such as chimpanzees and elephants influenced by hunting? We used 15 years of wildlife monitoring data to answer this question. @consbiogoe.bsky.social Read more here👇 www.researchgate.net/publication/...

New paper! Hunting affects spatial distribution and occupancy trends in elephants and chimpanzees in Cameroon: conbio.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.... The future of Europe’s forest disturbance regimes– a thread. Tl, dr: Disturbances from wildfire, bark beetles & wind will continue to increase in the coming decades. Under unabated climate change disturbances could more than double by 2100. New paper out in @science.org doi.org/10.1126/scie...

We had a great time at #gfoe2025 organized by @christianhof.bsky.social and many others. Good feedback on our analyses of historical bird trends across Germany, a project with @dda-avifauna.bsky.social.

#gfoe2025 has started, whohoo! Just enjoyed 2 great talks by @kampjohannes.bsky.social & @felixneff.bsky.social, highlighting the importance of considering longer time periods than just the last 2 decades to understand #biodiversity trends

New paper: 3rd chapter of Anne Graser's PhD thesis now published: How #forest disturbance, post-disturbance management and wild #ungulates affect #moth communities: besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/... @jappliedecology.bsky.social

Does the decline of many #bird species also trigger a decline in species identification skills in young people? Are we already witnessing the #extinction of experience? Our new study, led by Talia Härtel, and based on a large questionnaire resurvey, suggests so: www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

#NewPaper led by Brett R. Hankerson, @tkuemmerle.bsky.social @kampjohannes.bsky.social @danielmu11er.bsky.social and Florian Schierhorn out now in Regional Environmental Change @iamo.bsky.social link.springer.com/article/10.1...

#Bird #surveys: Do we need to rewrite our methodological standards? #PassiveAcousticMonitoring suggests that expert-based recommendations might lead to under-recording, due to diurnal and seasonal mismatches. Changes in #grazing patterns explain post-Soviet fire trends on the Eurasian #steppe better than #climate. More empirical evidence that the build up of biomass due to the collapse of livestock systems made Kazakhstan a global #fire hotspot: link.springer.com/article/10.1...
