Genome-wide sweeps create ecological units in the human gut microbiome - Nature
Genome-wide selective sweeps commonly occur in the human gut microbiome and can spread across the world within decades to produce epidemic-like population structures.

New preprint to close out the year! Led by Alana Papula and together with Daniel Fisher, we used single-cell genomes to infer the evolution of Prochlorococcus—one of the most abundant and genetically diverse bacteria on Earth. Check it out here: doi.org/10.64898/202...
Extensive recombination, selection, and asexual blooms shape the diversity of the dominant clade of Prochlorococcus
The tiny and enormously abundant marine cyanobacterium Prochlorococcus marinus contains many levels of population structure, with sequenced isolates spanning four orders of magnitude of diversity. It ...

A division of labor controls the degradation of fucoidans in the ocean
Fucoidans, complex polysaccharides produced by brown algae and diatoms, contribute to long-term carbon sequestration due to their resistance to microbial degradation1,2. While individual microbes can ...

Deciphering the gene-organism-environment triad is key to understanding microbiomes. But to go beyond who's there, we need to identify relevant coarse-grained physiological traits from (meta)genomes. Fill in forms.gle/CaXN8fNNdJkC... to make a KITP program about this happen!
